Keep candy, wrappers, costumes, and Halloween decorations out of harm’s way—and give pets a quiet place away from the door during trick-or-treating. LSU School of Veterinary Medicine’s October 5, 2026 guidance focuses on dogs and cats and explains what to do if a dog may have eaten chocolate.
Keep Halloween candy and wrappers away from pets
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolize more slowly than people. The danger depends on the type and amount of chocolate and the dog’s size; dark chocolate, baking chocolate, and cocoa powder generally pose greater risk than milk chocolate. LSU lists vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, excessive thirst, increased urination, a rapid or abnormal heartbeat, tremors, and seizures among possible signs of chocolate toxicity. Severe cases can be life-threatening.
Sugar-free candy or gum may contain xylitol, which can make a dog’s blood sugar fall dangerously low and may injure the liver. Swallowed candy wrappers can also obstruct the gastrointestinal tract. Keep candy bowls and trick-or-treat bags where pets cannot reach them.
What to do if your dog may have eaten chocolate
Do not wait for symptoms. LSU Vet Med says, “If you know or suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, contact your veterinarian or a veterinary emergency clinic promptly.” Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian instructs you to.

When you call, be ready to share your dog’s approximate weight, the kind of chocolate, how much may have been eaten, and when the exposure occurred. LSU’s Emergency & Critical Care page lists the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital at 225-578-9600 and recommends contacting a poison-control service for known toxin ingestion.
Choose a costume only if your pet is comfortable
A costume is optional. It can cause stress or become a hazard if it interferes with breathing, walking, hearing, vision, or other movement. LSU identifies panting, freezing, trying to escape, hiding, vocalizing, and repeatedly trying to remove clothing as signs that a pet may be uncomfortable.

- Consider your pet’s temperament; do not force it to wear clothing.
- Check that the fit allows normal breathing, movement, hearing, and vision. Avoid masks and other face coverings.
- Look for buttons, bells, ribbons, elastic, strings, or other small decorations that could be chewed off and swallowed.
- Watch for overheating, especially outdoors or in warm weather.
- Stay with a costumed pet, and remove the costume if it seems distressed or uncomfortable.
If clothing is not a good fit for your pet, LSU suggests a festive collar, bandana, or another simple accessory as a possible alternative. These options still need to fit safely and be supervised.
Make a plan for the front door and escape risks
Repeated doorbells, unfamiliar visitors, children in costumes, loud noises, and unusual neighborhood activity can frighten pets—even those that normally enjoy meeting people. During peak trick-or-treating, place dogs and cats in a secure, comfortable area away from the front door.

Check that your pets’ identification information is current, and have them microchipped when possible in case they get out. An updated ID tag can help identify a pet, but it does not guarantee recovery or replace a microchip.
Keep decorations and cords out of reach
LSU names candles, jack-o’-lanterns, electrical cords, and decorations as household hazards. Set them up where pets cannot reach, chew, knock over, or become tangled in them.

For suspected chocolate ingestion, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly rather than waiting to see whether symptoms develop.
