How do hospitals consider safety?
CDC recommends that animal-assisted activities and therapy use animals that are healthy, clean, well-groomed, and vaccinated, with trained handlers familiar with the animal’s health and behavior. The guidance also recommends minimizing contact with saliva, dander, urine, and feces, and practicing hand hygiene after contact. CDC’s general instruction is: “Practice hand hygiene after any animal contact.” It also notes that grooming or a therapy-animal cape can help manage loose hair. How to ask about a visit
- Contact the hospital before bringing the dog. Ask whether its policy permits animal visits and which program or approval process applies.
- Explain the patient’s situation. Ask the care team whether a visit is suitable given the patient’s room, infection precautions, allergies, immune status, and current condition.
- Clarify the dog’s role. Say whether this is a family pet, an animal in a hospital visitation program, or a service animal accompanying a person with a disability. Those categories are not interchangeable.
- Follow the facility’s instructions. Confirm the approved location, handler requirements, and hygiene precautions before the visit. Do not assume that permission for a common area also permits entry into a patient room.
What evidence says about dogs and recovery
