L-carnitine helps the body use fatty acids for energy, but that role does not mean every dog benefits from a supplement. Veterinarians may consider it for selected dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), especially when a deficiency or responsive condition is suspected. It is not a routine wellness supplement, and there is no universal dose for dogs.
What are the benefits of L-carnitine for dogs?
L-carnitine, also called levocarnitine, is involved in fatty-acid metabolism and energy production. Its potential clinical use in dogs is narrow: a veterinarian may consider it for certain dogs with DCM or a significant carnitine deficiency, rather than as a general energy or wellness booster.
The link between carnitine and DCM is not straightforward. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that myocardial carnitine deficiency is common in dogs with DCM, but is most likely a result rather than the cause in most cases. Merck says supplementation has had little success in other breeds and is not routinely recommended, given limited knowledge and expense.
Why some dogs may be considered differently
There are reports of selected dogs responding. A 1991 report described a family of dogs with DCM and reduced myocardial L-carnitine; two treated dogs had higher myocardial concentrations and improved health and cardiac function, followed by renewed dysfunction and clinical signs after treatment withdrawal. That family-level case report does not establish that L-carnitine helps dogs with DCM generally.

The 1997 Multicenter Spaniel Trial involved American Cocker Spaniels with decreased plasma taurine and taurine- and carnitine-responsive DCM. It supports consideration in a particular clinical context, not empirical use for healthy dogs or all dogs with DCM.
Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital cautions that “The majority of cases of DCM that are supplemented with L-carinitne will NOT improve.” Its guidance is for owners of dogs already diagnosed with DCM: ask the veterinarian whether supplementation may help. Texas A&M’s DCM guidance does not support trying it without veterinary advice.

What is the L-carnitine dosage for dogs?
There is no established universal canine dose. A UC Davis Stern Lab document, last updated August 20, 2018, recommends approximately 50 mg/kg orally with food every eight hours for dogs with diagnosed DCM. It also says a veterinary cardiologist or family veterinarian should determine the best dose. Treat this as dated, institution-specific guidance—not a dose to start without your veterinarian.
The same UC Davis document states: “The Stern lab does not recommend the empirical supplementation of taurine or l-carnitine to dogs without evidence of DCM and/or significant deficiency.” Diagnosis, the dog’s condition, and the veterinarian’s plan matter more than a general online dose.

When should I give my dog L-carnitine?
Give it only when your veterinarian has recommended it for your dog. The most defensible setting is a selected case involving DCM or suspected significant deficiency, with the decision made as part of veterinary care. Do not use it as a preventive supplement or assume that a DCM diagnosis alone means it will help.
Follow the prescribed schedule and course. VCA Animal Hospitals says oral carnitine may be given with or without food; the UC Davis Stern Lab’s dated DCM recommendation specifically says to give it with food. If your veterinarian’s directions differ from general product guidance, ask them which instructions apply to your dog.

How do I give it, and what form should I use?
VCA lists oral capsules, tablets, liquid, and powder. Use only the L-form—L-carnitine or levocarnitine—not D-carnitine. Choose a form your dog can take and that lets you measure the prescribed amount accurately; have your veterinarian review the formulation and its ingredients.
- Measure liquid carefully, following the veterinarian’s directions.
- Do not substitute a different product or form without checking that the dose and formulation are appropriate.
- Share your dog’s full medication and supplement list with the veterinarian.
VCA warns that “Just because a product is natural does not mean it is safe.” It also notes that the U.S. FDA does not review non-drug health products for safety or effectiveness before they are sold, so the presence of a supplement on the market is not evidence of FDA approval or proven benefit for your dog. See VCA Animal Hospitals’ carnitine guide.

Is L-carnitine safe for dogs?
VCA identifies mild gastrointestinal upset as a possible side effect and says allergic reactions can occur. Use caution if your dog is pregnant or takes valproic acid. Tell your veterinarian about all medicines and supplements before starting L-carnitine, and contact them if you notice a concerning reaction.
Safety and suitability depend on the individual dog, product, and reason for use. A veterinarian can determine whether supplementation is justified and how to monitor it; a supplement’s availability does not establish that it is appropriate for a particular dog.
How to choose an oral L-carnitine product
If your veterinarian recommends supplementation, focus on the factors that affect correct use rather than brand rankings. Confirm that the product contains the L-form, that the dosage form suits your dog, and that you can measure the prescribed amount reliably. Ask the veterinarian to review the full formulation and confirm that it fits the treatment plan.
Capsules, tablets, liquids, and powders are documented oral forms, but that does not verify a specific product’s current availability, quality, or suitability. Follow your veterinarian’s choice of product and directions.
