Yes. Leopard slugs (Limax maximus) lay eggs, usually in damp, sheltered places such as moist soil or beneath objects. The eggs may be clear when newly laid and turn cloudy and pearl-like as they develop; tiny slugs hatch from them.

Where leopard slugs lay eggs

Look in moist, protected spots rather than exposed, dry ground. The NSW Department of Education lists moist soil and places beneath objects. In gardens, sheltered areas around debris, pots, or rocks are also worth checking; UC ANR illustrates a leopard slug egg cluster in a sandbox. Its seasonal guidance applies to California’s North Coast, not to leopard slugs everywhere.

Eggs in a damp hiding place are not automatically leopard slug eggs. Location can help narrow the search, but it does not identify the species by itself.

What leopard slug eggs look like

Descriptions from university species accounts give a useful approximate size range: BioKIDS at the University of Michigan describes eggs as about 1/4 inch in diameter, while the University of Utah gives about 5 mm. These are rounded, source-specific descriptions, not a single precise measurement for every egg.

New eggs may be clear or colorless and transparent. BioKIDS says they can become cloudy and pearl-like as they develop. The University of Utah account says a cluster can contain up to several dozen eggs. Appearance and cluster size can vary, so neither is conclusive on its own.

How to distinguish them from other slug eggs

Color alone is not enough to identify an egg cluster as belonging to a leopard slug. Consider the combination of its sheltered, damp location, the cluster’s appearance, and whether leopard slugs are present. The Australian Museum identifies Limax maximus by dark spots on a light-brown body; the University of Kentucky field guide also uses the names leopard slug, great gray slug, and giant garden slug.

Those body markings are clues for identifying the adult slug, not proof of the identity of nearby eggs. Without a confirmed adult or other reliable identification evidence, describe the eggs cautiously rather than assigning them to a species.

What hatches from the eggs

Leopard slug eggs develop directly into slugs: hatchlings emerge as tiny slugs rather than as a separate larval form. The NSW Department of Education also describes the hatchlings as small slugs.

How mating relates to egg laying

Leopard slugs are hermaphrodites. The Australian Museum describes mating in which two slugs entwine and descend from a branch on a mucus thread to exchange sperm. That unusual behavior is distinct from egg laying: seeing slugs mate does not mean eggs will be laid immediately where they are hanging or nearby.

What is not established

The cited accounts do not establish a reliable incubation period, a lifetime egg total, or one laying season that applies everywhere. Seasonal timing can depend on location; for example, UC ANR’s advice concerns California’s North Coast and should not be treated as a universal calendar.
