India’s Exotic Pet Trade: Why 12,385 Red-Eared Sliders Were Seized

A 2026 article reports 12,385 red-eared sliders seized at two Indian airports, while a 2021 study lists 12,417 turtles. The counts differ in source and scope—and neither is a census of India’s exotic-pet trade.

A 2026 A-Z Animals article reports that customs authorities seized 12,385 red-eared sliders at Chennai and Tiruchirappalli international airports between 2018 and 2020. That figure is not a count of every turtle in India’s exotic-pet trade: it describes animals recorded in seizures at two airports during a defined period. A 2021 peer-reviewed study gives a different figure—12,417 turtles in its seizure table—and the available sources do not explain the 32-animal difference.

What the 12,385 figure means—and why another source says 12,417

The 12,385 figure comes from an October 6, 2026 article by A-Z Animals. It attributes that number to red-eared sliders seized at Chennai and Tiruchirappalli international airports between 2018 and 2020. The number should be read as that article’s reported total, not as a complete count of the species in India or a measure of how many were kept as pets.

Pragatheesh et al.’s 2021 study, published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa, lists 12,417 turtles among 12,505 exotic reptiles recorded in 15 enforcement seizures involving 22 species. Its methods describe seizure reports compiled from media and enforcement sources for March 2018 through March 2020. The study table and the 2026 article differ by 32 turtles. The sources do not establish why, so the totals should not be merged or treated as interchangeable.

Reported figure What it counts Period and scope Source
12,385 Red-eared sliders Reported seizures at Chennai and Tiruchirappalli international airports, 2018–2020 A-Z Animals, October 6, 2026
12,417 Turtles, within 12,505 exotic reptiles in total 15 enforcement seizures involving 22 species; reports assembled for March 2018–March 2020 Pragatheesh et al., Journal of Threatened Taxa, 2021
More than 6,000 Turtles and tortoises Nine cases booked in FY 2024–25; a later, broader taxonomic and time-period measure Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Smuggling in India Report 2024–25

These totals describe detected enforcement activity, not all animals traded, all owners, or the size of the market. The 2021 study drew on several media and agency sources, and its seizure records cover a limited period; they are not a census. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence’s later total also covers turtles and tortoises together and a different financial year, so it cannot be read as a direct update to either earlier turtle figure.

How India’s exotic reptile trade operates

The 2021 study identified 84 exotic reptile species in trade and documented online offers through WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, and web portals. It also found evidence of trade in native reptiles protected under India’s Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Its online monitoring and seizure records are snapshots of activity, not a complete inventory of sellers, buyers, or animals.

A July 2026 Down To Earth report on an assessment by Humane World for Animals describes a mixed supply chain involving legal imports, smuggling, and domestic breeding at both licensed and unlicensed facilities. The report identifies overland entry through the Northeast and air routes through major airports, followed by road or rail redistribution. Those reported routes describe patterns in the assessment; they do not establish how any particular seized animal entered the country.

Making cozy sunbath for reptile.

The same Down To Earth coverage reports that the assessment estimated the exotic-pet market at US$42.6 million for 2024 and projected a value of US$75.8 million by 2030, with a stated compound annual growth rate of 10.2%. These are report-based estimates and a forecast, not government valuations or totals derived from seizures.

Demand for pets is only one part of the trade picture. The sources also identify food and traditional medicine as uses associated with reptile trade. The evidence does not provide a nationally representative count of owners or a complete tally of animals in circulation, so neither a market estimate nor a seizure total can answer how many exotic reptiles are currently kept in India.

Why red-eared sliders raise ecological concerns

Red-eared sliders are native to the Mississippi River basin in North America. The A-Z Animals article reports observations in water bodies in Gujarat, Karnataka, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan, Goa, and Telangana, and describes competition with native turtles for food, basking places, and nesting sites. It also says the species is on the IUCN Invasive Species Specialist Group’s “World’s Worst Invasive Alien Species” list.

Those reported observations and ecological concerns do not show that every local population began with a pet release, or establish the origin of each animal found in the wild. They do explain why releasing an unwanted slider is not a safe solution. Conservation researcher Uttara Mendiratta, quoted by A-Z Animals in the context of releases, said: “It is not a good deed. They are releasing a highly invasive alien species.”

Clioran Turtle Tank Kit with Top Basking Platform,7.7 Gal 19.7X 9.5X 9.5 in
  • 7.7 Gal Starter Habitat for Small Turtles: Measures 19.7" × 9.5" × 9.5". Designed for baby, juvenile, and small aquatic turtles, not adult or large turtles. Before ordering, check your turtle’s current shell length and compare it with the listed tank dimensions to ensure a proper fit.
  • Double-Layer Space-Saving Design: Unlike submerged platforms that take up swimming space, the house-like upper platform sits above the tank edge to create more usable room. It provides turtles with a dedicated area to climb, explore, and bask while preserving lower water space for swimming.
  • Secure House-Like Basking Area: The enclosed upper design gives turtles a dedicated space to climb, rest, explore, and bask. Its stable structure helps reduce the chance of turtles wandering off an exposed platform while keeping the basking area separate from the swimming space.
  • Clear & Durable Polycarbonate Tank: Made from high-hardness polycarbonate with a thick, non-slip base for added stability. The clear construction provides a 360° view of your turtle and habitat, while the durable material helps resist everyday scratches, impacts, and yellowing for lasting use.
  • Complete Turtle Tank Starter Kit: Includes 1 turtle tank, 1 basking platform, 1 hide cave, 1 car ornament, 1 stone pack, 6 plants, 2 basking lamps with bulbs, 1 filter, and 2 replacement filter plates—providing a colorful starter setup for small turtles and fish.

The July 2026 report coverage also raises concerns about zoonotic risks and the capacity of rescue centres and zoos to care for non-native animals. It says facilities may lack trained veterinary staff, infrastructure, or long-term capacity for such species. These are risks identified in the report, not proof that every exotic animal carries disease or that every facility lacks the ability to care for one.

What owners should do if they can no longer care for a turtle

Do not release a red-eared slider—or another unwanted exotic pet—into a pond, river, or other natural water body. Given the reported invasive-species concerns, release can transfer the burden from an owner to native wildlife and ecosystems.

India’s rules and advisories concern wildlife protection and CITES-related controls, but the available sources do not provide a current consolidated legal text for deciding what a particular owner may do. Requirements can depend on the animal and the circumstances. Before transferring, surrendering, transporting, or disposing of an animal, contact the relevant local forest or wildlife authority and seek advice from a qualified veterinarian or reputable wildlife rescue organisation. Do not assume that a general online account of the rules settles the legal position for a specific animal.

What the seizure numbers can—and cannot—tell us

  • They show enforcement detections: the figures count animals reported in seizures, not the full flow of trade.
  • Their scopes differ: the 12,385 figure concerns red-eared sliders at two airports; the 2021 table lists turtles across 15 seizures; the DRI figure covers turtles and tortoises in nine cases during FY 2024–25.
  • They do not establish market prevalence: the reviewed sources offer no nationally representative count of exotic-pet owners or complete census of animals in trade.
  • They do not identify every animal’s route or fate: reported trade routes and ecological observations should not be used to infer the history of an individual seized or released animal.

The figures are evidence that enforcement agencies have intercepted substantial numbers of turtles and other reptiles, but their differing periods, categories, and methods matter. They are best understood as separate records of detected activity—not as competing estimates of one precisely measured national total.
