Possibly—but the words “liver disease” alone cannot tell you whether a senior dog is a good fit for your home. The answer depends on the dog’s specific diagnosis, symptoms, treatment and monitoring plan, and whether you can reliably provide that care. Before agreeing to adopt or foster, get the veterinary records and discuss the plan with the dog’s veterinarian.
What “liver disease” does—and doesn’t—tell you
Liver disease is a broad label, not a prognosis. A listing may not say whether a condition is confirmed or suspected, what tests support it, whether liver function is affected, or how advanced it is. Ask the rescue or current caregiver to clarify those points and have the treating veterinarian explain what they mean for this dog.
Published outcomes for chronic hepatitis describe particular groups of dogs, not an individual animal whose records and diagnosis are unknown. The 2019 ACVIM consensus statement reported a mean survival time of 561 ± 268 days across ten retrospective studies involving 364 dogs with chronic hepatitis. That group figure is not a countdown or a prediction for this dog. The statement also identifies factors associated with poorer prognosis, including high bilirubin, prolonged clotting times, low albumin, abdominal fluid (ascites), and the degree of liver scarring (fibrosis). Only the veterinarian assessing the dog can explain whether any of these findings apply.
Get the care plan before you decide
Ask for the veterinarian’s latest summary and the available test results, then confirm the plan directly with the veterinary team if possible. Senior pets need an assessment based on their individual history, examination, and diagnostic findings, rather than assumptions based on age or a short listing.

- Diagnosis: What specific condition is confirmed, and what remains uncertain? Which tests support it?
- Current condition: What symptoms are present? How are appetite, weight, and activity changing?
- Treatment: What medications and supplements is the dog taking, at what doses and times? Who manages refills?
- Food: What exact food and feeding instructions should be followed? Is it a prescription diet?
- Monitoring: What rechecks are recommended, what will be monitored, and when should the next appointment happen?
- Escalation plan: Which changes warrant a call, which require urgent attention, and which clinic should you contact after hours?
- Practical arrangements: What are the routine and foreseeable care costs, and what are the regular and emergency veterinary contacts?
- Comfort goals: What matters most for the dog’s day-to-day comfort, and how will decisions be made if the condition worsens?
If records are incomplete, ask the veterinarian what assessment is needed to establish a safe plan before placement. Do not treat missing details as evidence that the dog is either well or gravely ill.
Decide whether your home can meet the actual needs
Compare the veterinarian’s plan with your daily routine and resources. A dog may need regular medication, carefully followed feeding instructions, veterinary rechecks, or closer observation; the specifics vary. Consider whether you can provide the needed time, budget, transport, veterinary access, and a consistent routine, including during travel or schedule changes.

Also consider the dog’s comfort and your ability to respond if care needs increase. Ask the rescue whether it can support a foster placement, help coordinate veterinary care, or clarify responsibilities for costs and decisions. Fostering may be worth discussing when you are interested but need to understand the routine before making a longer commitment; it is not a substitute for knowing who will provide and pay for the dog’s care.
Food and supplements should be case-specific
Do not switch food, restrict protein, or add supplements, herbs, or “liver detox” products based only on the phrase “liver disease.” Nutrition depends on the condition, its severity, and the dog’s circumstances. Ask the veterinarian to confirm the food, calories, supplements, and possible medication interactions.

Some dogs with chronic liver disease may need a veterinary therapeutic diet and long-term reassessment. VCA and PetMD describe veterinarian-selected hepatic diets, including Hill’s Prescription Diet l/d and Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Hepatic, as examples to discuss—not automatic purchases or recommendations for every dog. If you look for “veterinary hepatic dog food,” use that phrase only as a starting point for a discussion with the veterinarian; do not change the dog’s diet without case-specific guidance.
Plan for follow-up and quality of life
Care usually involves more than an initial appointment. Depending on the individual dog, the veterinary team may track appetite, activity, weight, body condition, and liver-related blood tests. Ask what to watch at home, how often rechecks are needed, and how the plan will change if results or symptoms change.

Discuss comfort and crisis planning while the dog is stable, not only during an emergency. AAHA’s 2023 senior-care guidance says, “Palliative and hospice care should be included in the education and information provided to the veterinary team and the families of senior pets.” This does not mean hospice is needed now; it means families and veterinary teams should be prepared to discuss goals and options if a chronic or terminal illness progresses.

Senior-care guidance includes considering home adjustments, but the right setup depends on the dog’s mobility and living space. Ask whether the dog has difficulty with stairs, slippery floors, or reaching food and water, then address any specific barrier. A ramp, special bed, or other accessory is not automatically necessary just because a dog is older or has liver disease. A predictable routine and periodic veterinary examinations can also help you notice changes.

When the placement may be a good fit
Adoption or fostering may be reasonable when you understand the diagnosis and care plan, can follow it consistently, have access to veterinary support, and are comfortable discussing possible changes in the dog’s needs. It may be better to pause if essential records or responsibilities are unclear, the expected care exceeds your resources, or you cannot provide the recommended monitoring and follow-up. Ask the veterinarian and rescue what would need to be resolved before deciding.
