Young orangutans learn what to eat and how to meet other practical needs by both watching others and exploring for themselves. A recent study found wide differences in those learning propensities: individuals who showed stronger tendencies for both developed the broadest diets by the time they became independent. “Learning styles” is a useful shorthand for that variation, not a set of fixed learner types—and the study measured diet breadth, not survival rates.
How do young orangutans learn what to eat?
Orangutans spend an unusually long period dependent on their mothers, giving them time to acquire ecological knowledge before living independently. Learning includes attending to another orangutan’s behavior and practicing or exploring on one’s own. These approaches can work together: observation may expose a youngster to foods and techniques, while individual exploration helps build experience.
A 2026 study, “How 8 years of social and individual learning interact to shape ecological competence in orangutans”, analyzed nearly 7,000 behavioral bouts during an eight-year dependency period. The authors reported that social learning was recorded five times as frequently as individual learning. That frequency does not make independent exploration unimportant: young orangutans with higher propensities for both forms of learning developed the most expansive diet profiles by independence.
The authors also found that social learning partly compensated for diet-profile development when an individual’s propensity for learning individually was low. This is a finding about how the two learning processes related to diet breadth in the study, not proof that observation can replace exploration in every circumstance.

Are “learning styles” fixed types?
No. The phrase describes variation in observed tendencies, not a validated classification into stable types. The findings do not sort young orangutans into permanent categories such as “watchers” and “explorers.” An individual’s opportunities to observe others, developmental stage, and behavior all matter to what researchers can see.
One study also linked earlier experienced sociability with later exploratory tendency. The observational relationship does not establish a simple cause-and-effect mechanism; the study did not find the same association with current food abundance or maternal condition. See “Early sociability fosters later exploratory tendency in wild immature orangutans”.

Whom do young orangutans watch?
Attention to social models can differ with sex and development, but the evidence comes from particular populations and should not be treated as a rule for every orangutan. A 2021 observational study followed 50 immature orangutans—16 females and 34 males—across two populations. Females attended mainly to their mothers; males increasingly attended to non-mothers, including immigrant individuals. By the end of dependency, females’ diets overlapped more with their mothers’ diets than males’ did.
The study, “Immature wild orangutans acquire relevant ecological knowledge through sex-specific attentional biases during social learning”, describes patterns in its observed animals. It does not establish that all females learn only from mothers or that all males prefer other adults.

Does social opportunity affect exploration?
A comparison of wild orangutans at Suaq Balimbing in Sumatra and Tuanan in Borneo found more peering and exploration at the more sociable Suaq site, as well as a larger learned-skill set and higher mean dietary complexity. The authors examined how sociability related to exploration and innovation in the two populations; the comparison alone cannot show that sociability caused every difference between the sites. The findings are reported in “The effects of sociability on exploratory tendency and innovation repertoires in wild Sumatran and Bornean orangutans”.
What skills do they learn beyond finding food?
Subsistence knowledge includes practical behavior beyond foraging. Nest building, for example, is a routine skill young orangutans need to practice. In a 17-year study of 44 wild Sumatran orangutans, peering at nest construction was associated with increased nest practice. Nest-tree choices also showed evidence of social transmission across development.

The 2025 study, “Observational social learning of ‘know-how’ and ‘know-what’ in wild orangutans: evidence from nest-building skill acquisition”, connects observation with both practical know-how and knowledge of what to choose. Its results support social learning as part of skill acquisition; they do not mean observation alone explains every individual’s nest-building development.

Ecological competence matters as orangutans approach independence, but the recent study’s reported outcome was the breadth of individuals’ diet profiles by independence—not a measured difference in survival rates. The evidence supports a careful conclusion: young orangutans vary in how they learn, and stronger propensities for both social and individual learning were associated with broader diets. It does not show that one learning approach guarantees survival.
