In the UK, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) directory can help you find practices; wherever you live, verify current details directly with the practice and check professional registration through your local regulator.
Start with your pet’s species and likely care needs
A practice is only a suitable option if it sees your kind of animal and can manage the care your pet is likely to need. This matters especially for horses and livestock, as well as birds, reptiles, rabbits, and other animals that not every practice treats.
In the UK, the RCVS Find a Vet directory lets you search practices and filter by species. Use a listing to make a shortlist, then contact the practice to confirm its current services and whether it is accepting patients.
- Dogs, cats, and rabbits: Ask whether the practice routinely treats your pet’s species and can provide the care you expect.
- Horses, ponies, and donkeys: Look for an equine practice and ask how visits and urgent care are arranged.
- Cattle, sheep, pigs, and other farm animals: Check whether a farm-animal service covers your species and location.
- Birds, reptiles, and other less commonly treated pets: Ask about the team’s experience with that species, what can be treated on-site, and when the practice refers to another provider.
Some practices cover more than one group of animals. Do not assume that a practice treats an unusual or exotic species just because it treats pets generally.

Check whether getting there and getting an appointment will work
Map distance is only part of the decision. Consider transport, parking or public transit, and whether the journey would be manageable with an unwell or anxious animal. The UK government’s guide identifies proximity, ease of travel, and recommendations as factors owners consider when choosing a practice.
Call or visit to ask about routine appointment availability, follow-up communication, and who is likely to see your pet. A larger practice may have more staff, facilities, or services; a smaller one may make it easier to see the same clinicians. These are possible trade-offs, not guarantees of quality.
Online reviews can offer context, but the RCVS advises caution because reviews may be inaccurate or misleading. A conversation with the team, a visit where practical, and recommendations from people you know can help you assess whether the practice feels like a good fit.

- Should you call before travelling, and what should you do if you cannot reach the practice?
- Are there separate out-of-hours charges?
Save the instructions somewhere you can access quickly, rather than relying on finding them during an emergency.
Compare prices by asking what each fee includes
Ask shortlisted practices for fees for the same species and comparable services. In the UK, the government guide suggests checking consultation fees, prescriptions, initial and annual vaccinations, microchipping, and dog or cat neutering or spaying where relevant. Also ask about payment options and out-of-hours charges.

For a procedure, find out whether the quoted amount includes consultations, tests, medicines, and follow-up. A headline price may not cover every part of the treatment, so ask for a clear explanation of what is and is not included. A lower quote on its own does not establish better value.
For context, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) reported in its 2026 summary that average UK veterinary-service prices rose 63% between 2016 and 2023. This is a market-level measure, not a current price index or a quote for an individual pet’s care. The CMA also reported that UK pet owners spent over £6.7 billion on veterinary and other services in 2024—around £390 per pet-owning household. Those figures describe UK spending in 2024, not what a particular household should expect to pay.
Ask questions before agreeing to significant treatment
Before a substantial treatment or referral, ask the veterinarian to explain the clinical recommendation and the likely costs. The UK government notes that treatment costs are often estimates rather than fixed prices.

- Why is this treatment recommended, and how urgent is it?
- What reasonable alternatives are available, including referral to another provider or location?
- What outcome is likely, and what is the estimated total cost?
- What could change the estimate, and might more treatment or follow-up be needed?
- If cost is a concern, can care be staged safely?
Do not infer that it is safe to postpone care because you are comparing options. Ask the veterinarian to explain the clinical urgency and what could happen if treatment is delayed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Treat accreditation as one signal, not a substitute for fit
In the UK, participation in the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme is voluntary. The scheme uses standards and regular assessments, including spot checks, and has categories related to species, practice type, and services. It can help with comparisons, but you should still confirm that the practice suits your animal and practical needs.
The RCVS says independent, corporate, and charity practices can all provide excellent care; quality, the team’s skills and qualifications, and fit matter more than ownership alone. For US readers, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) also describes its accreditation as voluntary and based on practice standards. It is a US-specific signal, not a universal requirement. In any country, check the veterinarian’s registration or licence with the relevant local professional body.

It can make sense to use more than one practice
Your local practice may be right for routine care while a specialist handles complex treatment or diagnostic imaging. Different providers may also be needed for different species. If care is split, ask how the clinicians will share treatment details, medicines given, records, and test or scan results. Keep copies of your pet’s history and bring them when changing providers.
Rules, directories, fees, accreditation, and emergency arrangements vary by country and can change. The RCVS and UK government guidance cited here apply to the UK; readers elsewhere should consult their own jurisdiction’s regulator and veterinary directories.
