The most reliable way to reduce your dog’s risk of harvest mites is to avoid places where they have been found, especially affected grassy or wooded areas, and check your dog’s skin after each walk. You cannot guarantee your dog will avoid mites, but these habits can help you spot a problem early.
When harvest mites are a risk
Harvest mites are the larval stage of Neotrombicula autumnalis. The larvae wait on vegetation for passing animals, then feed where they contact the skin. Exposure comes from infested surroundings; the cited guidance describes environmental exposure rather than mites spreading directly from dog to dog.
The season depends on location and source: PDSA’s UK-pet guidance says harvest mites are most active from July to November, while ESCCAP describes activity in temperate climates commonly from July to October. Treat these as indicative seasonal windows, not fixed dates everywhere. ESCCAP says larvae feed for several days before detaching and notes that animals can be reinfested when they remain exposed.
How to reduce exposure on walks
Choose routes away from known affected spots
Avoid places where harvest mites have previously been found. ESCCAP identifies avoiding infested areas as the reasonable preventive measure. During the local risk season, also steer clear of known affected grassy or wooded areas and, where practical, high grass and weeds.

Inspect your dog after the walk
Check the paws and between the toes, legs, belly, armpits and ears. Look for tiny orange or red-orange dots as well as redness, intense itching, repeated licking, inflamed skin, scabs or pus. Mites can be hard to notice, so pay attention to irritated areas as well as visible specks.
Use parasite products only with veterinary guidance
Some flea treatments may be effective against harvest mites, but that does not mean every flea product is suitable for every dog or is labelled to prevent harvest mites. ESCCAP discusses fipronil and synthetic pyrethroids as mite-control options in its guidance, with pyrethroids restricted to dogs there; this is not a blanket consumer recommendation. Ask your veterinarian to choose an option based on your dog, other animals in the household, local product licensing and the product label.

The UK Veterinary Medicines Directorate’s 2026 Be Spot-On Aware campaign addresses responsible use of flea and tick spot-on products; it does not establish that a particular spot-on prevents harvest mites. If you use a spot-on, follow its label and your veterinarian’s directions. The VMD also warns that washing treated pets or allowing them to swim soon after application can contribute to environmental contamination, and reports monitoring concerns about some active substances in waterways.
What not to rely on as proven prevention
The cited sources do not establish that dog boots, clothing, paw rinses or over-the-counter tools prevent harvest-mite infestations. VCA’s suggestion to use clothing and socks applies to people entering mite habitats, not evidence that dressing dogs prevents mites. Route choice and post-walk checks are the supported practical steps.

When to contact a veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian if you suspect harvest mites, particularly if your dog is very itchy, the skin is inflamed, or you see scabs or pus. A vet can often identify mites visually and may take a skin sample if needed. They may prescribe medication to kill the mites, anti-inflammatory treatment for severe itching, or antibiotics if a secondary infection has developed.
After woodland exposure, vomiting, diarrhoea, low energy, a high temperature or muscle tremors need immediate veterinary advice. PDSA says seasonal canine illness is suspected to be linked to harvest mites, but the cause is uncertain; do not assume mites are the proven cause of these signs.
