After a walk in mite-prone habitat, gently inspect your dog’s head, ears, feet, and belly in good light. Harvest mite larvae may appear as tiny orange-to-red oval dots that stay still, but skin irritation and itching alone cannot confirm an infestation. A home check can raise suspicion; a veterinarian can diagnose it and advise on care.
Where to look after a walk
Harvest mites are the parasitic larval stage of mites in the family Trombiculidae. Dogs can pick them up while walking or lying on the ground in suitable outdoor habitat. Check the areas where larvae commonly cluster first:
- Head and ears: Look around the ear openings and folds, and across the face.
- Feet: Check between the toes and around the paws.
- Belly and underside: Examine the skin and coat where they contact vegetation or the ground.
Use good light and part the coat gently so you can see the skin. A magnifying glass can help you spot small dots, but it does not establish a diagnosis. Merck Veterinary Manual describes these common sites and the use of magnification in its clinical overview of mange in dogs and cats.
What harvest mite larvae may look like
Attached larvae may look like tiny orange-to-red oval dots that appear immobile. Merck reports an approximate size of 0.7 mm for an engorged larva; that is a reference measurement, not a size every larva or visible spot will match. Do not assume that every orange speck is a mite—or that a mite must be visible to explain irritation.

Check for irritation, but do not rely on symptoms alone
Redness, small raised bumps (papules), hair loss, crusts, and itching can occur. Itching can range from absent to severe and may continue for hours or several days after larvae have left, so symptoms do not show whether mites are still present. These signs also overlap with other skin problems.
What to do if you find suspicious spots
Note where you saw the spots and any changes in your dog’s skin or behavior. Do not scrape the skin, apply medication, or treat the appearance as a confirmed diagnosis based only on a home inspection. Contact your veterinarian if you suspect harvest mites, or if itching or skin changes are significant, persistent, or severe.

A veterinarian can assess exposure history and signs, examine the skin, and, when useful, check skin scrapings under a microscope for six-legged larvae. Other itchy skin conditions may need to be ruled out. Treatment depends on the diagnosis and the dog: medicines used for trombiculosis may differ from those for other mite infestations, and prolonged or severe itching may require care for symptoms or a secondary infection. Merck’s dog-owner guidance on mite infestations notes that preventing reinfestation is often difficult.

These are general patterns, not a prediction for a particular location or a guarantee that a dog has been exposed. If practical, avoid areas known to harbor mites.

Harvest mite infestation itself is described as noncontagious, but other mite conditions can spread between animals or people. If another pet or a person develops symptoms, ask a veterinarian or healthcare professional rather than assuming the cause is the same.
