Before pickup day, confirm the shelter or rescue’s requirements, prepare a quiet room, and arrange a sturdy, secure carrier for the ride home. Adoption rules vary by organization, so use its instructions—not another shelter’s checklist—as your guide. Once home, give your cat space to settle and arrange a veterinary visit shortly after adoption.
Confirm the adoption and pickup details
Adoption applications, eligibility rules, fees, and pickup timing are set by each organization. Some shelters offer same-day adoptions; others need more time. Ask the organization you are adopting from what to bring, when and where to collect the cat, and what the fee covers. Fees often help pay for care such as veterinary services, spaying or neutering, vaccinations, and food. If you rent or live in a building with pet rules, confirm that cats are allowed before you finalize plans. The ASPCA explains how adoption requirements differ between organizations.
Ask what is known about the cat before pickup. Request available veterinary records, vaccination and parasite-treatment information, microchip details, current medications, dietary needs, and any known health or behavior concerns. Ask how the cat has responded to people, children, other animals, and carrier travel, if that history is available. International Cat Care’s homing information pack offers examples of details to collect.
Do not assume another organization’s requirements apply to yours. For example, the ASPCA’s New York City mobile adoption events ask adopters to bring unexpired government-issued ID, may request proof of address, and require cats and kittens to leave in secure carriers. Those are local event instructions; check the rules for your own pickup. The ASPCA mobile adoption page notes that event details can change.

Prepare a quiet, safe space at home
Set up one calm room or enclosed area before bringing the cat home. A smaller starting space gives the cat a place to decompress and lets you control access to hazards while it adjusts.
- Secure cords, windows, and doors, and block access to places where the cat could become trapped or injured.
- Remove chewable hazards and check household plants against a reliable pet-safety resource; some plants are poisonous to cats.
- Set out food and water bowls, a litter box, and a scratching post. Toys and a perch can provide useful enrichment.
- If you have another pet, keep that pet’s toys separate while the animals adjust.
Choose food appropriate to the cat’s age, activity, and health; a veterinarian can advise on a suitable diet. Keep fresh, clean water available at all times. No particular food brand is required by the guidance cited here. The ASPCA’s general cat-care guidance covers food, water, litter, and scratching needs.

Set up the litter box
Put the box somewhere quiet and easy for the cat to reach. In a multi-level home, the ASPCA’s general guidance recommends one litter box per floor. Scoop solid waste at least once a day. If the cat will not use the box, consult a veterinarian; a medical issue can sometimes contribute.
Choose and prepare a carrier for the ride home
Use a secure carrier for the entire trip. Do not carry the cat loose in a vehicle, even for a short drive. International Cat Care recommends a sturdy carrier with secure construction and easy access; a model that opens at the top and separates so its top can be removed can make handling easier. Choose a size that will suit the cat as an adult and allow it to stand and turn around. International Cat Care’s 2024 kitten booklet describes carrier selection and transport.

- Put familiar, soft bedding inside if you have it.
- Check that the door and fastenings close securely before placing the cat inside.
- In the car, keep the carrier as level as possible and secure it so it cannot slide or tip.
- When carrying it, support the base rather than letting the carrier swing from its handle.
- Keep handling calm and avoid unnecessary opening or exposure, especially if you do not know the cat’s prior carrier experience.
Some organizations make a carrier a condition of pickup. The ASPCA’s New York City mobile adoption unit, for example, states: “All adopted cats and kittens are required to go home in a secure pet carrier.” This is an event-specific rule, not a universal law; confirm the requirement with your own shelter or rescue. Use a pickup-day checklist
- Before leaving: Recheck the organization’s pickup time, location, identification rules, paperwork, and carrier requirements.
- Bring the carrier: Make sure it is secure, appropriately sized, and ready with soft bedding if available.
- Collect the cat’s information: Take home available veterinary records and confirm microchip details, medications, feeding instructions, and known needs.
- Travel directly and calmly: Keep the cat inside its secured carrier for the ride and avoid unnecessary stops or handling.
- At home: Carry the cat to the prepared quiet area, close the door, and let it come out and explore at its own pace.
Help your cat settle in during the first days
Let the cat observe and explore without forcing contact. Keep a predictable routine, and give it time and space around children and resident animals. Do not rush introductions or expect the cat to behave as it will once fully settled. The ASPCA’s “3-3-3 Guideline” describes the first three days as a period that can feel overwhelming and recommends patience and calm; it is a rough framework, not a timetable every cat will follow. Arrange a veterinary appointment shortly after adoption and bring the records you received. The veterinarian can review preventive care, vaccinations, parasite control, diet, and any known medical needs for this cat. Follow the veterinarian’s advice for the individual animal.
