Harvest mites can cause intense itching and irritated, sometimes damaged skin in dogs. They are the larval stage of outdoor mites: they attach to the skin’s surface to feed, rather than burrowing deep beneath it. Dogs pick them up in infested outdoor areas, and the infestation is not passed directly from dog to dog or from dog to person.

What harvest mites are

Harvest mites, also called chiggers, are mites in the family Trombiculidae. Only their six-legged larval stage parasitizes dogs. Adult and nymph stages live in the environment, feeding on decaying material rather than on animals. The larvae are tiny: Merck Veterinary Manual gives an approximate length of 0.25 mm before feeding and 0.7 mm when engorged in its May 2025 reference on mange in dogs and cats.

Dogs encounter larvae outdoors. Possible habitats include grassland, forests, tall grass, weeds, leaf litter, pine straw, and bark or mulch. In temperate regions, exposure is generally most common from summer into fall; in warmer regions, infestations may occur year-round. In the UK, PDSA describes activity most commonly from July to November, a local pattern rather than a universal season.

How harvest mites affect dogs

The larvae attach to the skin, pierce its surface with hooked mouthparts, and release enzymes that digest skin cells. They feed for a few days, then drop off when engorged. The resulting irritation can be mild or cause severe itching; scratching and chewing can further injure the skin.

Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiparasitic & Antiseborrheic Wash, 16 oz
  • PROMOTES A HEALTHY COAT – Support your dog with a soothing wash that clears away environmental stressors, helping manage dry, flaky skin so their coat stays clean and comfortable
  • TOUGH ON FLAKES AND ODORS – This medicated shampoo for dogs uses coal tar and salicylic acid to shed dead cells, leaving a medicinal scent that shows the active ingredients are working
  • SOOTHES SENSITIVE SPOTS – Oatmeal and allantoin provide gentle hydration to help manage seasonal allergies, letting you wash your pet safely without relying on harsh soaps or dyes
  • BALANCED FOR CANINE CARE – Human washes are too acidic, but this pH-balanced formula supports dog skin safely, giving you peace of mind when dealing with an occasionally itchy pup
  • SIMPLE AT-HOME WASH – Spot test first, then massage the shampoo into the coat for 10 minutes, knowing some initial flaking is just a normal part of brushing away dead skin cells

Signs may include redness, small bumps, scabs or crusts, hair loss, and raw or bleeding patches. The head, ears, paws, spaces between the toes, and underside are common sites. Engorged mites may look like clusters of fixed orange or red dots, but itchy skin has many possible causes, and appearance alone does not confirm harvest mites. Itching can continue for hours or several days after the larvae have left.

How a veterinarian checks for harvest mites

A veterinarian considers the dog’s outdoor exposure and skin signs, then examines the affected areas. A superficial skin scraping viewed under a microscope may help identify larvae, especially when they are difficult to see. Fleas, allergies, and other skin conditions can cause similar itching, so an accurate diagnosis matters before treatment.

Contact a veterinarian if you suspect mites, if itching is severe or persistent, or if your dog has open sores, crusting, or signs of a skin infection.

Treatment: get veterinary guidance

Treatment has two distinct aims: killing the mites and helping the dog recover from irritation or skin damage. Merck lists fipronil and permethrin as options for dogs, while noting variable results for pyrethroid products used to prevent infestation. VCA explains that some flea-control insecticides can kill harvest mites when used correctly, but no products are licensed specifically for harvest-mite treatment in cats and dogs. Product authorization, formulation, and suitability differ by country, so a veterinarian should choose any treatment for your dog.

Do not use permethrin on cats; the option cited by Merck is for dogs only. Do not guess a dose or apply a product intended for another species. VCA also cautions that rubbing alcohol does not kill chiggers or relieve symptoms and may burn or discomfort the skin.

After mites are killed, some dogs need no further treatment. Others may need veterinary care to control inflammation and itching or to treat a secondary infection. These are individual treatment decisions, not a reason to give medication without professional direction. A 2019 open-label controlled study enrolled 15 client-owned dogs to examine a particular permethrin-fipronil topical formulation; that small study is not evidence that every product containing those ingredients is appropriate for every dog.

Are harvest mites contagious?

No. Merck classifies canine trombiculosis as noncontagious. Dogs and people can both encounter mites from the same infested outdoor habitat, but an affected dog does not directly pass harvest mites to a person.

How to reduce the chance of another infestation

Avoiding places known to be infested during the local risk period is the clearest prevention measure. Reinfestation can be difficult to prevent if a dog repeatedly visits an area with many mites. Chemical products may be considered with veterinary advice, but preventive results can vary; no product should be treated as a guarantee.

When woodland illness needs urgent attention

Vomiting, diarrhea, unusual tiredness, a high temperature, or muscle tremors after woodland exposure require immediate veterinary attention. PDSA notes that the cause of seasonal canine illness is uncertain and only suspected to be linked to harvest mites; these symptoms should not be taken as proof that mites caused the illness.
