If you’re struggling to pay for your pet’s care, tell the veterinarian what you can afford and ask for the safest, prioritized plan. At the same time, contact local animal-welfare organizations and assistance programs. If your pet may be in immediate danger, call a veterinarian or emergency clinic now—don’t wait for an aid application or financing decision.
If your pet may need urgent care
Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic and describe your pet’s symptoms. Ask whether the animal needs to be seen immediately and what to do while you arrange care. Financial assistance can be limited by location, eligibility, application timing, and available funds; it is not a substitute for getting prompt veterinary advice.
For example, the Vancouver Humane Society’s McVitie Veterinary Assistance Program is for eligible British Columbia residents and defined emergencies. It requires an application before treatment, is not guaranteed, and pays the veterinary clinic. Those rules apply to that program, not to assistance programs generally.
Talk with the veterinarian about what you can pay
Be direct about your budget. You can say: “I want to get my pet appropriate care. I can pay $___ today and possibly $___ later. What is the safest plan within that budget? Which tests or treatments are urgent, what can wait, and can you refer me to a lower-cost clinic?”

- Multiple Sizes & Lid Colors: Choose from a variety of BPA-free airtight bins in different sizes and lid colors for storing daily and specialty feeds, or snacks; Lightweight polypropylene design—flexible, not rigid like hard-sided bins
- Space-Saving Dimensions: Measuring 16.5" L × 10.8" W × 18.4" H (16.9" H without wheels), it’s compact enough for pantries, laundry rooms, utility shelves, countertops, or cabinets
Ask the clinic to explain which care is time-sensitive, whether treatment can be staged safely, and whether there is a lower-cost approach. Also ask about payment arrangements, lower-fee clinics, nonprofit providers, or a nearby veterinary college. The Humane World for Animals fact sheet recommends discussing financial limits and asking about cost-effective care, payment plans, and lower-fee referrals.
A second opinion may help you understand alternatives or costs, but ask your veterinarian whether it is safe to wait before seeking one. The Nevada Humane Society’s financial assistance guide suggests asking about minimum treatment options and multiple opinions; its examples are not a universal medical recommendation.

Look for local help while you arrange care
Contact local humane societies, animal-welfare groups, rescues, food pantries, and community-service directories. Ask specifically whether they know of:
- Veterinary assistance funds or low-cost clinics
- Pet-food pantries or other help with essentials
- Temporary foster care or boarding during a crisis
- Veterinary colleges, nonprofit clinics, or lower-fee referrals
The Humane World for Animals fact sheet points readers to Pet Help Finder and local animal-welfare resources. Services depend on where you live and on each organization’s eligibility rules and capacity. Check the service area and ask whether the provider can address your pet’s needs before relying on a referral.

Apply to assistance programs and check their requirements
Ask each program what it requires before applying. Common requests include a veterinary diagnosis or estimate and proof of financial need; some programs have additional conditions. Grants may cover only part of a bill, and some funds may require applicants to try financing first.

The Nevada Humane Society guide lists organizations such as RedRover, Pets of the Homeless, Paws 4 A Cure, and The Pet Fund as possible starting points. These organizations are independent, with their own application processes and rules; funding is not guaranteed. Confirm that a program is currently accepting applications, serves your location, and can help with the specific care your pet needs.
Regional restrictions can be detailed. The Humane Society of Aurora & the Fox Valley veterinary assistance program, for example, describes eligibility tied to its region, approved providers, documentation, and a co-pay. It pays the provider rather than reimbursing the owner. Read the current requirements before making a plan around any program.

Weigh financing and fundraising carefully
CareCredit and Scratchpay are payment options named in the Humane World for Animals fact sheet. Before applying, confirm that your veterinarian accepts the service and review its current eligibility criteria, fees, repayment schedule, promotional terms, and consequences of missed payments. Borrowing creates an obligation even if assistance or reimbursement is uncertain.
The same fact sheet describes Waggle as a fundraising platform for emergency veterinary care, with payments made directly to veterinarians. Check its current availability, eligibility, and terms directly. Neither financing approval nor fundraising is certain or necessarily fast enough for urgent treatment.
If you can’t keep caring for your pet
Before deciding to rehome or surrender your pet, ask local shelters, rescues, and pet-support organizations whether food, veterinary assistance, temporary foster care, or another service could help the pet stay with your family. If rehoming is necessary, share the pet’s health and behavior history, screen prospective adopters carefully, and transfer veterinary records.
Some shelters offer private-rehoming tools or referrals to rescues. If you are considering surrender, ask the shelter about its process, service area, appointment requirements, fees, and current capacity. The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County says surrender requests are evaluated case by case and appointment availability may vary. Its procedures are specific to that organization; another shelter may have different rules, and intake is not guaranteed.
