No single meeting guarantees compatibility. Ask the shelter or rescue about the individual animal, and involve your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional if health or behavior concerns could affect the decision.
Start with the pet who already lives with you
Your resident pet’s temperament, health, routine, and response to change should guide the decision. Some animals may prefer being the only pet, while others may tolerate or enjoy company; there is no universal compatibility test. Consider how your pet behaves around other animals and whether it relies on predictability, personal space, or a quiet environment.
Age, pain, health conditions, or behavior concerns may affect how an animal handles a new companion. Ask your veterinarian whether those factors should shape your decision. Be realistic about your pet’s everyday routine, too: a household’s work patterns and capacity to maintain familiar care can matter during a transition.
Choose for individual compatibility, not just species or appearance
Ask the adoption organization what it knows about the prospective pet’s temperament, history with other animals, activity level, and care needs. Find out what staff have actually observed and whether they can arrange a suitable, controlled introduction. A pet’s behavior in a shelter or during one meeting does not establish how it will behave in every home.

Compare the two animals’ needs and likely ways of interacting. For two dogs, RSPCA guidance recommends considering personality and exercise or activity level. In a dog-and-cat household, prior experience with the other species can help inform a match, but it cannot guarantee a particular outcome. Adoption organizations may assess compatibility, but their practices vary.
- Does the prospective pet’s energy level fit the resident animal and your household?
- What is known about each animal’s sociability and experience with the other’s species?
- Can you meet both animals’ health, exercise, and daily-care needs?
- Can your home and schedule support separate retreats and a gradual introduction?
Check the household’s time, space, and budget
A second pet adds ongoing care as well as an adoption process. Ask the local shelter or rescue for its current fees, procedures, health-history information, and any veterinary expectations. Costs and adoption practices vary by organization and location, so use local figures rather than relying on a universal total. Consider whether your budget and schedule can accommodate each animal’s continuing needs.

Make sure you can give both animals their own resources and a place to retreat. A quiet dedicated area can help a newly adopted animal adjust; gates may limit access to parts of the home, but they do not replace supervision or a safe introduction plan. Gather species-appropriate supplies in advance. For a cat, preparation can include a litter box and scratching posts.
Prepare for a gradual introduction
Before the new pet arrives
Ask the shelter or rescue about the animal’s health history, behavior around other animals, and the organization’s approach to compatibility. Find out what support is available after adoption. Prepare separate safe spaces and each animal’s essentials. A calm home base and a manageable routine can give a new pet room to adjust; do not force interaction with people or other animals.

For two dogs
When feasible, begin by exchanging scents before direct contact. RSPCA Australia advises a supervised meeting on neutral ground, with both dogs leashed and a separate handler for each. Keep interactions gradual, observe both dogs, and provide separate retreats. Put valued food, toys, and treats away from shared areas during early meetings to reduce competition. Recent health checks and appropriate vaccinations and parasite control are also part of preparation; ask your veterinarian what is suitable for the individual dogs.
For a dog and a cat
Give the cat a protected retreat and keep the animals apart while they become familiar with each other’s scent. If you proceed to a meeting, keep it controlled and supervised; a dog may be leashed. Do not leave them together when nobody is home until their interactions show that both are reliably safe and comfortable.

For other species or uncertain matches

If either animal shows distress, pause and return to a more separated, lower-pressure stage. Do not force contact or move forward simply because a certain number of days has passed. Keep them separated when you cannot supervise until they are safe and settled together. If fear or aggression persists, seek advice from the shelter, veterinarian, or a qualified trainer or animal behaviorist.

Adjustment takes time. Preserve routines where you can, give each pet space, and let them approach interaction at a pace they can manage. The goal is not to make them become friends on a schedule; it is to provide a safe home in which both can cope.

Guidance from organizations such as RSPCA Australia, RSPCA UK, ASPCA, and American Humane Society offers useful general welfare advice, but adoption processes, legal requirements, costs, and veterinary recommendations can depend on where you live. Confirm practical details with your local shelter or rescue and veterinarian. Careful matching and introductions can help you make an informed choice, but they cannot guarantee that two particular pets will bond.
