A hard-sided plastic carrier with a top opening or removable top is a practical choice. Use a carrier even for a short trip, and let your cat come out in a quiet room at home rather than pulling them out.
How do I choose a secure carrier for bringing my newly adopted cat home?
Compare carriers on the features that matter for the journey and for handling a new cat:
- Reliable construction and closure: Check the door, hinges, seams and latches. International Cat Care recommends sturdy plastic because it is robust and easier to clean. It cautions that cardboard or temporary carriers may fail, woven materials are difficult to clean, and a determined cat may open a zippered fabric carrier. International Cat Care’s 2024 kitten guidance explains its carrier recommendations.
- Ventilation: Choose a carrier with openings that allow air to circulate. ASPCA travel guidance recommends a ventilated carrier.
- Room to move: Your cat should be able to stand, turn around and lie down. For a kitten, consider the adult cat’s likely size rather than buying a carrier that will quickly become too small.
- Useful access: A front door lets a cat walk in during gradual carrier practice. A top opening can make it easier to place a hesitant kitten inside, while a removable top can allow access without pulling the cat through the door.
- Vehicle stability: Consider how the carrier can be positioned and secured so it will not slide or shift while you drive.
- Easy cleaning: A washable surface is useful if your cat has an accident or becomes sick during the trip.
There are no comparative crash tests or brand rankings established by the cited guidance, so these features do not show that one particular carrier is safest.
What size carrier does my kitten need?
Choose a carrier that can accommodate the cat as an adult, with enough space to stand, turn and lie down. International Cat Care recommends planning for adult size even when buying for a kitten. If the carrier feels overly roomy for a small kitten on the first trip, place rolled-up towel or bedding inside to reduce unused space while leaving room to move.

For any cat, ASPCA guidance describes enough space to stand or sit without touching the top, lie down and turn around. Do not fill the carrier so tightly with bedding that it restricts movement.
How do I prepare and check the carrier before pickup?
- Ask the shelter about its rules. Carrier requirements can differ by location. ASPCA’s NYC Adoption Center says adopted cats and kittens there must go home in a secure pet carrier; that is a location-specific policy, not proof of a universal shelter rule. - Inspect the carrier. Before putting the cat inside, check the seams, door, hinges and latch. Close the door and confirm it stays shut.
- Add a washable layer. Put an absorbent liner or familiar bedding on the floor. For a kitten in a larger carrier, a rolled towel can reduce excess open space.
- Secure the cat inside before leaving. Close and check the carrier door before you leave the shelter. Keep the cat contained for the entire trip and at stops.
How do I keep my cat safe in the car on the way home?
Keep your cat inside the closed carrier while the vehicle is moving and whenever you stop. A loose cat can interfere with the driver or escape. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2016 travel guidance advises confining cats in a cage or carrier in a vehicle to help them feel secure, keep them from getting under the driver’s feet and prevent escape during driving or stops.

Position the ventilated carrier so it cannot slide or shift, following the carrier’s design and the vehicle’s available secure placement. ASPCA travel guidance also recommends securing the carrier against movement. Do not carry the cat loose in your arms or open the carrier during a stop.
Carry the carrier with support underneath rather than relying on its handle alone, and keep it level when moving. This makes handling more stable, especially if the cat shifts inside.

What should I do when we arrive home?
Prepare a quiet, safe room before bringing the cat inside. Carry the closed carrier into that room, set it down level, and open the door. Give the cat time to emerge and explore at their own pace; do not force interaction with household members or other pets.
