To estimate what a dog or cat will cost each month, add the pet’s recurring bills, divide predictable annual expenses by 12, and set aside monthly reserves for irregular costs such as dental care, illness, grooming, or boarding. Keep adoption or purchase and setup expenses separate from the ongoing budget. There is no single reliable monthly price for every pet: location, size, age, health, diet, grooming needs, and travel habits all matter.
Build a monthly estimate from your own expenses
Start with actual or locally quoted costs for your pet rather than treating a national average as a bill you will receive. Use this worksheet:
Monthly estimate = recurring monthly bills + (annual recurring expenses ÷ 12) + monthly reserves for irregular expenses.
For example, if an expense occurs once or a few times a year, estimate its yearly total and divide by 12. That creates a steady monthly contribution toward the bill instead of leaving the full amount to the month it arrives. If you cannot predict an expense precisely, label the amount a reserve, not a forecast.

List the recurring costs
Write down the expenses you expect to pay repeatedly. Include the categories that apply to your animal, and use local prices when you can.
- Food: Estimate the amount your pet eats and the price of the food you plan to buy.
- Cat litter: Include litter and any routine disposal supplies for cats.
- Routine veterinary care: Budget for routine exams and preventive care based on your veterinarian’s schedule and fees.
- Preventive medication and other medication: Account for the products and prescriptions your pet needs.
- Treats and toys: Estimate normal replacement and replenishment rather than assuming these are occasional extras.
- Grooming and supplies: Include grooming products or appointments, plus recurring equipment or care items.
- Licensing: Add it where required, using the applicable local fee and renewal schedule.
Not every category applies to every household. Use your pet’s needs and the frequency of each expense to decide whether it belongs in the monthly column or the annual-expense calculation.

Set monthly reserves for irregular bills
Some costs are intermittent but predictable enough to plan for. Estimate a yearly amount for each relevant category and divide by 12. Keep these reserves distinct from fixed monthly bills so the estimate does not imply that an uncertain expense is guaranteed.

- Grooming appointments
- Boarding or pet sitting
- Training
- Replacement of damaged or outgrown equipment
For unexpected veterinary care, you can also plan an emergency-savings contribution. If you are considering insurance, account for the premium and understand that it does not eliminate all out-of-pocket costs. Compare policy exclusions, waiting periods, coverage limits, deductible, and reimbursement terms for your pet before deciding how to budget.
Keep first-year and setup costs separate
These costs can occur before or soon after bringing an animal home, so list them separately rather than blending them into the steady monthly estimate:

Use national estimates as comparison points, not promises
Published figures can help check whether your worksheet has missed a category, but the sources use different years and methods. The APPA figures below are annual category estimates from its 2024–2025 National Pet Owners Survey, reproduced by the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I). They are not a complete annual cost of owning a pet.

Other estimates illustrate why a single monthly number can mislead. The ASPCA’s 2021 estimate totaled $1,391 annually for a dog and $1,149 for a cat, itemizing categories including food, routine medical costs, preventive medication, insurance, supplies, and other costs. It is a dated estimate, not a current local quote.
Synchrony’s 2025 Pet Lifetime of Care Study reports one-year care estimates of $1,591–$2,770 for dogs and $1,873–$3,006 for cats. Its modeled 15-year care estimates are $22,125–$60,602 for dogs and $20,073–$47,106 for cats. These are study-model ranges, not guaranteed costs for an individual pet or a monthly bill.
For historical context only, the AVMA report based largely on 2020–2021 survey data found average annual veterinary-care spending of $367 for dog-only households and $253 for cat-only households, and food spending of $339 and $310 respectively. These older household spending categories use a different basis from APPA’s more recent per-category figures, so they should not be combined. See the AVMA expenditures report.

Personalize the estimate for your pet and household
Before settling on a monthly target, review the factors most likely to change your numbers:
- Size and food requirements: A pet’s size and diet affect how much food you buy and which products meet its needs.
- Age and health: The care and medication a pet needs can vary over its life and with its health.
- Coat and grooming: Grooming needs and appointment frequency differ among animals.
- Local prices: Veterinary fees and other local costs are specific to where you live; national estimates cannot substitute for local quotes.
- Travel and schedule: How often you need boarding or pet sitting can materially change the budget.
- Insurance choice: Premiums and coverage terms depend on the pet and policy.
There is no complete, current, directly comparable total in these sources that establishes a universal dog-versus-cat cost ranking. Compare the costs that apply to your circumstances—food and litter, size and consumption, grooming and boarding, routine and preventive veterinary needs, insurance terms, and first-year setup—rather than assuming one species always costs less.
