Before you pay, get the seller’s or shelter’s terms in writing: what the payment covers, whether a kitten is actually held, what happens if plans change or no suitable kitten is available, and when and how you will collect the kitten. Shelter adoption rules differ from breeder contracts, so confirm the policy with the specific organization.
How kitten reservations differ at shelters and breeders
Shelter adoption
Availability, holds, fees, and adoption steps are set by each shelter. For example, Miami-Dade Animal Services describes adoptions as first-come, first-served and says an adopter must make a commitment in person. That is Miami-Dade’s policy, not a rule for shelters everywhere. Its kitten adoption services may include vaccinations, deworming, a microchip, and spay or neuter surgery, with exceptions for animals that are too young, too small, or unwell.
Breeder purchase
A breeder’s written agreement should explain whether you are reserving a named kitten or joining a selection process. Check when selection happens, how the list is ordered, what the deposit covers, and the pickup or delivery terms. Any specified pickup age or deadline is that seller’s term—not a general standard. Ask which veterinary services and records are included.
What does a kitten deposit cover, and is it refundable?
There is no single standard deposit or refund rule. The signed agreement controls the seller’s stated terms, subject to applicable local law. Some published agreements make deposits non-refundable but allow transfer to another litter if the buyer’s preferences are unavailable; others describe different outcomes if the buyer cancels or the seller cannot provide the kitten. These individual agreements are examples, not evidence of an industry-wide practice or legal rule.

Before sending money, ask whether the payment is a waitlist fee, a reservation for a specific kitten, or a portion of the purchase price. Get clear written answers to these questions:
- Does payment hold a particular kitten, or only establish your place in selection order?
- If your preferred kitten, sex, color, or other trait is unavailable, can you wait for another litter, transfer the payment, or request a refund?
- What happens if you change your plans, or the seller cannot provide the kitten or delays pickup?
- How much remains due, when is it due, and are delivery or transport charges extra?
- Will you receive a receipt and a copy of the agreement before paying?
Does a waitlist guarantee a kitten?
Not necessarily. A waitlist may give you a position or selection priority without guaranteeing a kitten, a particular litter date, or your preferred traits. One sample agreement explicitly says a place in line does not guarantee a kitten or requested preferences and warns that litter timing may take longer than expected. Ask how the order works, when selection is likely, and what choices you have if no suitable kitten is available.

What should a kitten reservation agreement say?
Read the agreement before paying. It should make the transaction and handoff understandable without relying on verbal assurances. Look for the kitten’s identity or the selection process, the purpose and treatment of the payment, the total price, the remaining balance and due date, and the pickup or delivery arrangements.
- Reservation: Is a specific kitten being held, or are you joining a waitlist? How and when will selection occur?
- Payment: Is the deposit refundable, transferable, or forfeited in each relevant circumstance? Does it count toward the final price?
- Timing: What is the estimated pickup window, and what happens if the litter or handoff is delayed?
- Handoff: Where and by whom will the kitten be transferred? Are delivery, a courier, or a flight nanny involved, and what do they cost?
- Care and records: Which veterinary services, identification details, and documents will be provided?
Ask for the contract to read before making a deposit. If an important term is missing or unclear, request a written clarification or amendment rather than assuming what it means.

How to check the seller and kitten before paying
Check the seller’s identity and the kitten’s records before transferring money. The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries buyer guidance recommends researching the seller, seeing the animal and its living conditions when possible, and checking vaccination, flea and worm treatment, and microchip records. In NSW, verify applicable seller or rehoming identifiers through the state registry. These are NSW-specific recommendations and protections; elsewhere, check the relevant local registry and consumer-protection rules.
The NSW guidance flags being unable to see the animal, being asked to pay before viewing, not receiving a documented receipt, or being given invalid identification as reasons for further checks. It also distinguishes a veterinary health check from a vaccination certificate. Ask for records that identify the kitten and show vaccinations, deworming, microchip details, and whether spay or neuter surgery has been done or remains scheduled. A seller’s contract may list these details, but one sample agreement is not a universal required form.

What should you confirm before kitten pickup?
Confirm the date and location, who will hand over the kitten, what identification or paperwork to bring, the payment method and balance deadline, and whether anyone else is arranging transport. Ask whether the shelter or seller supplies a carrier. If you are crossing a state or national border, check current requirements with the relevant authorities and your veterinarian; do not assume a seller’s general statement establishes travel eligibility.
Plan to bring a secure, well-ventilated carrier. The ASPCA’s NYC adoption guidance requires adopted cats and kittens to leave in a secure pet carrier. Its car travel guidance recommends securing the carrier so it cannot slide or shift during a sudden stop. Choose a carrier appropriate for the kitten and the journey.
