Wet cat food served in a bowl should be picked up and discarded after about an hour. Purina recommends leaving it out for no more than 30 to 60 minutes to help prevent bacterial growth, and says to discard food left in the bowl for more than one hour. This is practical handling guidance, not a precise test of the moment food spoils.
How long can wet cat food stay in the bowl?
Use a 30-to-60-minute serving window, then discard whatever your cat has not eaten. Purina’s wet-food guidance gives the 30-to-60-minute recommendation to help prevent bacterial growth, while its storage guidance says to discard bowl food left out for more than one hour.
These recommendations are best treated as a cautious routine: serve a portion your cat can finish within about an hour, rather than leaving a full meal available for several hours. The guidance does not establish one exact spoilage moment for every room temperature, recipe, bowl, or cat.

What should you do with food left in an opened can or pouch?
Food that remains in its original opened can or pouch is different from food that has been served in the bowl. Promptly cover and refrigerate the unused portion instead of leaving it at room temperature. The FDA advises promptly refrigerating or throwing out leftover canned or pouched pet food, and recommends keeping the refrigerator at 40°F or below.
Purina says to cover an opened can, refrigerate it right away, and discard any food still remaining after three days. A reusable pet-food can lid can help cover the can, but it does not extend the time food can safely sit out in the bowl.

Does warm weather change the time limit?
Warm conditions are a reason to be especially cautious, but the cited cat-food guidance does not set a separate hot-weather limit. The FDA says, as general guidance for perishable human food, to discard food left at room temperature for more than two hours, or after one hour when the temperature is above 90°F (32°C). That rule is not a cat-food-specific threshold, so it should not replace the shorter serving window recommended for wet cat food.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can smell or appearance tell you whether wet food is safe?
No. Do not use a normal smell or appearance as proof that food is safe. The FDA identifies a foul odor, swollen or leaking packaging, foreign objects, or a pet becoming sick after eating as signs of a possible product problem; those are warning signs, not a complete safety test. If your cat becomes ill after eating, stop feeding that product and call a veterinarian.
