Offer the new food in its own dish beside the familiar food, and never withhold the old food to force a choice. Keep total calories steady while you do it. A cat that suddenly won’t eat, or that goes without food, needs a veterinarian. That isn’t stubbornness.
Before you start: is this pickiness or a health problem?
Ask your veterinarian whether wet food suits your cat’s age, health, body condition and any prescribed diet. Do this first if your cat has a medical condition or eats a therapeutic food.
Also decide whether this is a food preference or a change in appetite. If a cat that normally eats well suddenly becomes reluctant, loses weight, or shows other signs of illness, get veterinary advice instead of trying new foods. Cornell Feline Health Center warns that a cat that refuses to eat can develop serious medical problems, and that a cat refusing food and losing weight should be examined.
Step 1: Choose a suitable wet food
Look for a food labelled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage (kitten, adult or senior). If your cat has a chronic condition, follow your vet’s advice on the diet.

Wet food is typically about 70–80% water, according to Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. That is a useful fact about the food. It doesn’t prove every cat must eat wet food only. No single brand, formula or texture is established as best, so the right food is the one that is appropriate for your cat and that your cat will actually eat.
Step 2: Work out the daily amount in calories, not scoops
Because wet food contains more water, a scoop of it does not supply the same energy as a scoop of kibble. Matching volumes can leave a cat under-fed or over-fed. Instead:

The transition chart below changes the mix of foods. It does not tell you to cut total calories.
Step 3: Set up a calm, predictable feeding spot
Cornell notes that noise, heavy foot traffic, other animals, dirty dishes and nearby litter boxes can put a cat off eating. So:

- Wash dishes between meals.
- Keep the dishes away from the litter box, busy walkways and other pets that might crowd in.
- Put the wet food in a separate dish next to the familiar food. AAHA/AAFP guidance says a separate adjacent container lets the cat show a preference.
Step 4: Follow a gradual schedule
PetMD’s example moves the new food from 25% to 100% in two-day stages. A 7–10-day transition is also described in the 2021 AAHA/AAFP life-stage guideline, which leaves room for clinical judgment. Your vet may recommend a different pace for your cat.
| Days | Familiar food | New wet food |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 75% | 25% |
| 3–4 | 50% | 50% |
| 5–6 | 25% | 75% |
| Day 7 onward | 0% | 100% |
Apply the percentages to the daily calorie allowance, not to bowl volume. Move to the next stage only when the cat accepts the current one and is eating enough. If the cat resists or gets digestive upset, stay at the stage it tolerates and ask your vet about the pace or the food. A cat that is slow to accept wet food may need longer than 10 days.

Step 5: Change one acceptance factor at a time
Cats respond to smell, texture, temperature and flavor, and individual preferences vary. If the first food is refused, change only one thing before the next try, so you can tell what helped.
- Texture or flavor: Offer a small serving of a different texture or flavor instead of switching everything.
- Temperature: Warm the food gently to make it more aromatic. AAFP/ISFM guidance describes warming canned food to about body temperature or adding warm water. Never serve it hot, and stir to check for hot spots.
- Added water: If it makes the food less appealing, stop. Serve a food the cat will eat and ask your vet for guidance.
- Dish shape: A flat or shallow dish is a cheap experiment if your cat seems uncomfortable reaching into a bowl. The AAFP/ISFM guideline supports flat dishes for access in clinical care. It does not show that every home cat needs one.
Toppers, supplements and feeding gadgets aren’t necessary for this transition. A topper changes the diet, so discuss it with your vet if your cat has a medical condition or eats a prescribed food.

Step 6: Track intake and know when to call the vet
Note what the cat actually eats each day, not just what you put down. Contact your veterinarian if you see vomiting, diarrhea or a drop in appetite during the change. Don’t wait for the schedule to finish.
Seek veterinary care promptly if your cat suddenly stops eating or loses weight. PetMD advises immediate care if a cat has gone more than 24 hours without eating.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Don’t remove the familiar food to make the cat “give in.” A cat that goes without food can become seriously ill.
- Don’t treat refusal as a behavior problem by default.
- Don’t assume equal scoops mean equal calories.
- Don’t serve hot food.
