Open shade or a cloudy day is a good outdoor starting point; indoors, use available soft light or bounce a compatible flash from a light-colored surface.
Why black fur loses detail in photos
Black fur can blend into shadow, while dark eyes may be hard to distinguish from the coat. The goal is not simply to make the whole image brighter: it is to reveal the coat’s shape and texture while keeping bright areas from losing their detail.
Nikon notes that black-coated pets’ eyes can be difficult for both people and animal-detection autofocus to see because the eyes and fur are similar in color. Nikon’s pet-photography guidance recommends lighting the eyes.
Choose light that shows the coat and eyes
Outdoors: start in open shade or cloud
Try open shade or a cloudy day, with the dog’s face turned so light reaches the eyes. Look for a small catchlight in the eyes. Best Friends recommends shade or cloudy conditions and light in the eyes in its pet photography tips.

Turn the dog slightly toward the light so it grazes the coat and gives fur strands some tonal separation. If the dog’s coat merges with a dark background, change your position or choose a lighter-toned background when possible.
Indoors: use available light or bounce flash
Without flash, place the dog near a bright window or other soft light source, with light reaching the face. Keep the dog still if the available light is limited; the cited guidance does not establish universal shutter-speed or ISO settings for indoor action shots.

If you have a compatible external Speedlight, bounce it off a white or light-colored ceiling or wall rather than pointing bare flash directly at the dog. A suitable surface is essential: a dark or unsuitable ceiling may not return useful light. Nikon recommends bounced flash indoors and says to adjust flash compensation up or down according to whether the result looks under- or overexposed.
Focus on the near eye, with a fallback ready
When your camera supports animal eye detection and it finds the eye reliably, use it. If it misses, select a focus point near the face or eye, or use subject tracking if your camera offers it. Camera menus and tracking behavior differ by model.

Nikon lists several conditions that can interfere with animal eye detection: eyes and surrounding colors that are too similar, dim or very bright face lighting, an obstructed eye, and excessive movement. Repositioning the dog or changing the light may help; otherwise, switch to a focus point or tracking method you can verify.

- Frame the dog against a background that separates from the coat in tone, if the scene allows.
- Take a test image and inspect the fur, eyes, and bright areas—not just the overall brightness.
- If fur texture disappears into shadow, redirect or add light, or adjust exposure carefully.
- If bright surroundings lose detail, change the angle, background, or balance of light rather than automatically increasing exposure.
- For bounced flash, review the result and adjust flash compensation up or down as needed.
There is no single exposure-compensation value, aperture, shutter speed, or ISO setting established here for every dog and scene. The right adjustment depends on the light, background, movement, and highlights in your frame.

Choose an approach for the situation
