Wasp spiders are not considered dangerous to people and are highly unlikely to hurt you. They catch insects rather than damage plants, so an outdoor web that is out of the way can usually be left alone. The evidence consulted does not establish how wasp-spider bites affect dogs, cats, or other pets, so avoid letting a pet paw at or eat one.
Can a wasp spider hurt a person?
The wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) is not considered dangerous to people. The British Arachnological Society describes it as harmless and says it is highly unlikely to hurt a person; the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales also says the species is not dangerous itself. Those descriptions do not establish that a bite is impossible, so avoid handling the spider.
Do not confuse it with other spiders that may have different risks. For example, the University of Minnesota Extension discusses other garden orb-weavers, including Argiope aurantia and A. trifasciata; those are not the wasp spider.
Are wasp spiders dangerous to dogs or cats?
The sources consulted do not establish species-specific effects of wasp-spider bites in dogs, cats, or other companion animals. That lack of evidence is not proof that contact is harmless, nor does it show that this species is poisonous to pets.

As a precaution, keep a pet from pawing at or eating an unidentified spider. If your pet develops a concerning reaction after contact, contact a veterinarian and describe what happened.
What does a wasp spider look like?
The female has striking yellow, black, and white stripes, including on her legs. The male is smaller and pale brown. The spider builds a large orb-shaped web, often with a conspicuous white zigzag band of silk called a stabilimentum. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales notes that webs and egg sacs are associated with grasses.
In the UK, that Trust lists habitats including grassland, heathland, farmland, coastal areas, woodland, towns, and gardens, and reports that the species is found in southern England and spreading north. Do not apply that range description to other countries. The British Arachnological Society describes large webs in open, long grass in southern England; in its UK account, adults mature in August and September.
Are wasp spiders bad for gardens?
No. Wasp spiders are insect predators, not plant-eating garden pests. The British Arachnological Society lists crickets, grasshoppers, flies, and other insects among their prey. The University of Florida IFAS Extension says garden orb-weavers in the genus Argiope provide biological control of insect pests. That is a genus-level description, not a measured claim that this particular species will reduce a specific pest in your garden.

More broadly, NC State Extension explains that outdoor spiders prey on insects that feed on flowers, shrubs, and other plants. Its garden-spider example is Argiope aurantia, a different species, so this supports general guidance about spiders in gardens rather than a species-specific claim about wasp spiders.

If the web is outdoors and does not interfere with people or pets, leaving it undisturbed is reasonable. If it crosses a walkway, go around it when possible. When a web blocks regular access, clear only the part that is causing the problem, take care not to touch the spider, and use a localized, non-chemical approach rather than treating the garden broadly.
Rank #4
NC State Extension says outdoor pesticide applications for spiders are largely unnecessary and should be avoided; spraying can also kill beneficial natural enemies. Its advice concerns outdoor spider management generally, not a tested relocation or removal method for wasp spiders. There is no need to use pesticide simply because the spider resembles a wasp.
