One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most Dachshunds, a reasonable starting point for switching from puppy food to adult food is around 12 months of age. That timing follows general guidance for small and medium dogs—not a Dachshund-specific deadline—so consider your dog’s growth, body condition and health with your veterinarian. Choose food labeled complete and balanced for the life stage your dog is in, then transition gradually.
When should you switch a Dachshund from puppy food to adult food?
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says small and medium-size dogs typically eat a growth diet until approximately one year of age. This is a practical starting point for a Dachshund, not a fixed birthday rule: the guidance does not name Dachshunds or set an exact cutoff for every dog. Ask your veterinarian to help decide when your dog’s growth and individual needs make the change appropriate. AAHA’s age-specific diet guidance was published June 22, 2021.
Do not switch a puppy to adult food early just to cut calories or address excess weight. Discuss the dog’s weight and feeding amount with your veterinarian while keeping the diet appropriate for growth.
Why puppy and adult foods differ
Growth and adult maintenance are distinct nutritional life stages. AAFCO explains that an active, growing puppy needs nutrients in different quantities and ratios than a mature dog. FDA describes separate nutrient profiles for growth and reproduction and for adult maintenance. The food’s life-stage statement therefore matters more than whether its name or packaging says “puppy,” “adult,” or “Dachshund.” AAFCO’s guide to selecting pet food and the FDA explanation of complete and balanced pet food describe these distinctions.

How to choose food for your Dachshund
Start with the nutritional adequacy statement
Check the package for a statement that the food is complete and balanced for dogs at the relevant life stage. FDA explains that a product may substantiate this claim by meeting AAFCO nutrient profiles or by passing an AAFCO feeding trial. A food labeled for growth is the relevant category while your dog is still growing; choose adult maintenance once your veterinarian agrees it is time to switch.
Some foods are labeled for “all life stages.” AAFCO says these should provide separate feeding directions for growth and maintenance, so check the actual package rather than assuming one amount fits every age. Labels and formulas can change. See AAFCO’s guide to reading pet food labels.

Compare calories and feeding amounts
Use the food’s feeding directions as a starting point, then work with your veterinarian to adjust the amount to your dog’s weight, activity and body condition. Compare calorie density between candidate foods as well as the suggested daily amount; a change in formula may mean the appropriate portion changes too. A label’s guide is not a substitute for assessing the individual dog.
Consider kibble size, not breed branding alone
Small-breed foods may offer smaller kibble and different calories per pound, considerations noted by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Those features may help you compare options, but a small-breed or Dachshund label does not by itself establish that a food is superior or required. Choose a complete and balanced food that suits your dog and can be fed at an appropriate amount. AKC’s small-breed food guide discusses these considerations.

How to transition from puppy food to adult food
Change foods gradually rather than making an abrupt switch. AKC recommends a gradual transition and suggests consulting your veterinarian—and, when possible, the breeder—about timing in light of the dog’s growth and breed. Its guidance does not establish a single transition schedule for every dog, so ask your veterinarian how to make the change for yours. AKC’s puppy-feeding guidance covers the transition.

A product chart hosted by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine lists Royal Canin Dachshund Puppy and Dachshund Adult dry foods. It states that the puppy formula meets AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth, including growth of large-size dogs. This identifies examples of products labeled for different life stages; it does not compare their performance or endorse either one.
