Before bringing a rescue cat home, prepare a litter box and familiar litter, the food the cat is already eating, separate food and water dishes, a secure carrier, a scratching surface, and a few safe toys. Set them up in a quiet room with somewhere comfortable to rest or hide. First ask the rescue what the cat uses and which veterinary care and identification steps are already documented.
What to buy before your cat arrives
Start with the basics rather than buying a full collection of accessories. The right choices depend on the cat’s age, health, preferences, and what the rescue can send home.
- Litter box and litter: Choose a box the cat can enter easily and keep it clean. Many cats prefer a simple, uncovered box and unscented, fine-textured litter; a kitten or a cat with arthritis may need lower sides. Ask which litter the cat knows, and place the box away from food and water. For multiple cats, Cornell recommends one box per cat plus one. Cornell Feline Health Center guidance
- Current food and separate dishes: Ask what the cat has been eating and have some available. If you plan to change foods, Cornell advises continuing some of the familiar food while transitioning gradually. Choose a complete diet suited to the cat’s life stage; ask a veterinarian about health-related dietary needs. Put food and water in separate dishes, well away from the litter box. - Carrier: Have one ready for the journey home and future veterinary visits. Cornell and the ASPCA include a carrier in their new-cat provisions. Ask the rescue about transport arrangements before buying, in case it can help with the trip. ASPCA cat-care checklist
- Scratching surface: Scratching is normal cat behavior. Offer a post or pad; if the rescue knows the cat’s preference, choose a vertical surface for a cat that scratches upright or a horizontal option such as a cardboard scratcher for one that scratches flat. - A few safe toys and a resting place: A small selection of toys and a bed or blanket gives the cat options without filling the room with things it may not use. A familiar blanket from the rescue may be helpful if one is available. American Humane’s adoption checklist and ASPCA cat-care checklist
Prepare a quiet room for the first days
Before arrival, choose a quiet, enclosed room where the cat can settle without having to explore the whole home at once. Put the litter box, food and water, carrier, toys, and resting place there, keeping the dishes away from the litter area. American Humane recommends initially keeping a newly adopted cat in one room while it adjusts, and Best Friends Animal Society also advises preparing a quiet safe room for the first days. Follow the rescue’s plan for this particular cat, especially if other pets live in the home.
Leave the carrier available in the room if practical, so it can serve as a familiar place to retreat as well as transport gear. Give the cat time to explore at its own pace rather than expecting it to use every new item right away.

Ask the rescue before buying extras
A short conversation can prevent duplicate purchases and help you keep the cat’s routine consistent. Ask:
- Which food and litter is the cat currently using?
- What veterinary records and medication instructions will come with the cat?
- Which vaccinations, parasite treatments, sterilization procedures, and identification steps have already been completed?
- Does the cat have known dietary, mobility, litter, or scratching preferences?
- What introduction plan should you follow if you have other pets?
Shelters may already have provided services such as spaying or neutering, initial vaccines, or microchipping, but services vary. Confirm what has actually been done in the cat’s records rather than assuming it is included. Cornell advises asking about prior vaccinations, nutrition, parasite control, and grooming, and having a new cat checked by a veterinarian soon after coming home. Optional supplies to decide on later
A brush or comb may be useful depending on the cat’s coat and grooming needs. The ASPCA also lists a safety collar with identification. Before buying identification supplies, ask the rescue whether the cat already has a microchip or other identification; discuss collar use with the rescue or veterinarian for guidance suited to the individual cat. These can wait if the rescue’s advice or the cat’s needs are not yet clear.
Keep the first shopping list short. Once you learn what the cat uses and prefers, you can add or adjust supplies rather than guessing in advance.
