Before a giant-breed rescue dog arrives, prepare a quiet place to rest, secure escape routes and household hazards, and make the trip between resting, eating, and potty areas safe. The right setup depends on the individual dog—not a universal room size or equipment list—so ask the rescue about the dog’s size, temperament, health, behavior, food, and medications, and ask a veterinarian about care needs associated with the dog’s breed or type.
What should you ask the rescue before bringing the dog home?
Get practical details that will shape the home setup and first routine. If the rescue does not know an answer, treat it as something to observe or discuss with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional rather than making an assumption.
- What is the dog’s current size, expected adult size if known, energy level, and handling history?
- What medical conditions, mobility concerns, medications, dietary needs, or veterinary instructions are known?
- What food is the dog eating now, and what are its usual meal and bathroom routines?
- What behaviors, fears, triggers, or signs of stress have caregivers observed? Is the dog comfortable being alone or confined?
- How has the dog responded to children, visitors, other dogs, cats, and household sounds?
- What equipment and restraint methods have worked safely for this dog?
The AVMA advises discussing healthcare needs related to a dog’s type with a veterinarian. Bring the rescue’s information to the dog’s first veterinary appointment so care can be tailored to the individual animal. AVMA: Selecting a pet dog.
How should you set up the home before arrival?
Create one quiet, limited first space
Choose a calm area where the dog can rest without visitors or resident animals crowding it. Set out a bed or familiar bedding, water, and a feeding spot away from busy foot traffic. Keep a clear, supervised route from this space to the planned outdoor potty area. A temporary gate can help limit access while you learn how the dog behaves in the home.

Keep the dog’s initial area manageable and gradually allow access to more of the home as it settles in and you can supervise safely. Check exits, yard boundaries, and hazards
Before opening the door, check that gates and exterior doors close securely. Inspect fenced areas for gaps and identify any route where the dog could slip out. Until you know the dog’s recall and comfort outdoors, supervise trips to the yard and use a suitable leash or harness.

- Electrical cords and small objects
- Food that is unsafe for dogs, medications, and household cleaners or chemicals
- Trash, shoes, socks, and clothing
Supervise and redirect rather than assuming a room is dog-proof. AAHA recommends keeping hazards out of reach and supervising pets as they explore. AAHA: Essential Tips for Pet-Proofing Your Home.
Add traction on slippery routes
Place securely positioned rugs or runners on slick paths the dog will use, especially where it turns, stops, or walks between its resting place and the outdoors. Choose coverage that does not slide or bunch underfoot and that you can keep clean. This is a practical way to reduce slipping risk, not a guarantee against falls. AAHA specifically recommends rugs or runners to increase traction for older or large-breed pets.
Prepare basic supplies and household plans
Have food and water bowls, bedding, a leash, and a properly fitting collar or harness ready. Maddie’s Fund lists two to three six-foot leashes among supplies to consider; the number and restraint choice should fit the dog’s size, behavior, and handling history. Plan how children and visitors will give the dog space, how resident pets will be introduced, and whom to contact for emergency veterinary care or behavior support. Should you use a crate, a gated room, or an exercise pen?
There is no single best containment option for every rescue dog. Decide based on the dog’s comfort with confinement, the risks in the space, your ability to supervise, and the safe area available. A gated room or exercise pen may be a better choice than a crate for a dog that becomes distressed when confined in one.

If you choose a crate
Select one that lets the dog stand without ducking, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Wire crates are durable and may include dividers; plastic crates have solid walls and are durable; fabric or mesh crates are less durable and may not suit dogs that chew. An extra-large dog crate is an optional supply, not a default requirement: choose by the dog’s actual fit and behavior rather than the label alone.
Introduce the crate gradually with positive reinforcement. Do not force a dog to remain confined if it shows significant distress, such as persistent barking, pacing, panting, elimination, or drooling. In that case, try a larger dog-proofed space and consult a veterinarian or qualified trainer. Cornell cautions: “A dog should never be left alone in a crate for an extended period of time without the opportunity to relieve themselves, play or exercise, and perform other natural behaviors.” Cornell: Dog crates—when to use them and how to pick one.

How should you plan meals and the first days?
Keep feeding familiar and appropriately portioned
Start with the food and meal schedule the rescue reports, unless a veterinarian has advised otherwise. Avoid guessing the right quantity: ask the rescue for the current portion and consult a veterinarian about an appropriate amount for this dog. Merck Veterinary Manual advises feeding large-breed dogs smaller meals at least twice a day to help prevent bloating. Merck Veterinary Manual: Providing a Home for a Dog.
Make the routine predictable and introductions gradual
Coordinate meals, bathroom breaks, walks, play, and training so the dog can begin to anticipate what happens next. Keep the first space calm, allow undisturbed rest, and introduce resident pets carefully while ensuring the new dog always has a safe retreat. Use the rescue’s knowledge of known triggers and handling needs to guide introductions; do not assume that a dog’s behavior in one setting predicts how it will respond at home.
Build alone time slowly
Let the dog become familiar with the home before leaving it alone. Begin with very short absences and increase them gradually, or arrange for a trusted person to check in. There is no single adjustment timetable that applies to every rescue dog, so respond to the dog’s behavior and seek help if distress persists.
