Keep pet food inside a closed residence whenever possible. If it has to be stored in an outbuilding or taken camping, use a secure area and a container specifically considered bear-resistant for that location. Don’t leave food on a porch, in an open garage, or outside overnight; if you feed a pet outdoors, pick up the bowl and leftovers as soon as the pet finishes.
How to store pet food at home
- Keep the food indoors. Store it inside a closed residence, ideally in a closed storage area.
- If you use an outbuilding, secure it. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife recommends keeping food in a bear-resistant container inside a secure area such as a basement, garage, or secure shed. A garage is not a safe choice if its door is left open.
- Remove outdoor food promptly. North Carolina Wildlife advises against leaving pet food outdoors overnight and says to remove leftovers after outdoor feeding. Pick up the bowl when your pet is done, and don’t leave food on a porch or in an open garage. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission guidance and New Jersey Fish and Wildlife guidance cover these precautions.
Is an airtight pet-food bin bear-proof?
No. Airtight and bear-resistant describe different things. An airtight bin may help contain odors, but that alone does not establish that it can withstand a bear or that local authorities accept it for bear country. British Columbia recommends airtight, non-odorous storage locked inside residences, while New Jersey separately calls for bear-resistant containers when storing food in a secure area. Don’t treat a standard pet-food bin as bear-proof unless it is specifically rated or accepted for the intended use.
Odor masking is not a substitute for keeping food inaccessible. North Carolina Wildlife notes that masking odors is only temporary for garbage; its guidance does not establish that masking makes pet food inaccessible to bears.
How to store pet food while camping
Rules differ among parks and land-management areas, so check the current requirements for the exact place you plan to visit. Some locations require food lockers or bear-resistant canisters; others allow a food hang. The National Park Service advises treating pet food, garbage, toiletries, wrappers, and other scented items as attractants and storing them according to local rules. National Park Service: Bear Safety—Storing Food
#1 Best Overall
- Food Storage for All Pets: Keep dog kibble, cat dry food, bird seed, pellets, and treats fresh and organized in one versatile 33 Quart container that holds approximately 22–26 lbs of most dry kibble, depending on kibble size—not all 30 lb bags will fit
- Airtight Freshness Protection: Snap‑lock lid and foam-line seal lock out moisture and humidity, preserving flavor and nutrition while keeping storage areas clean and organized
- Easy to Move, Store & Refill: Comes with attachable wheels, giving you the freedom to roll the bin from your kitchen pantry to feeding station or tuck it away on a shelf when not in use
- Multiple Sizes & Lid Colors: Choose from a variety of BPA-free airtight bins in different sizes and lid colors for storing daily and specialty feeds, or snacks; Lightweight polypropylene design—flexible, not rigid like hard-sided bins
- Space-Saving Dimensions: Measuring 16.5" L × 10.8" W × 18.4" H (16.9" H without wheels), it’s compact enough for pantries, laundry rooms, utility shelves, countertops, or cabinets
- Use the required locker, canister, or other approved storage method for the area.
- Keep bear-resistant containers closed and locked. The National Park Service notes: “Bear-resistant containers only work if they are closed and locked.”
- When using a canister in the backcountry, place it on flat, level ground at least 100 feet from camp, away from cliffs and water. Don’t tie a rope to it; a bear could use the rope to carry it away.
- At a campground, don’t store food in a tent or backpack when the local guidance calls for separate secure storage.
Choosing a storage approach
If you need to buy a container, look for one specifically rated or accepted as bear-resistant for your intended location and use. Agency guidance supports the category, not a particular brand or model, so check local acceptance rather than relying on a product description alone. If you can keep food inside a closed home and remove outdoor bowls promptly, those basic steps may be all you need.
Bear-resistant storage reduces access but is not a universal guarantee against every bear. If a bear has already reached stored food or repeatedly approaches your home, contact your state, provincial, tribal, or local wildlife agency for location-specific guidance.
