Switch gradually. Start with a small share of the new food mixed into the current food, then raise it in steps over about a week, or longer if your dog has a sensitive stomach. If stools turn loose, go back to the old diet until they firm up, then restart more slowly. Call your veterinarian if diarrhea lasts more than a day or two.
None of the veterinary or kennel-club sources reviewed gives a schedule written specifically for Great Pyrenees. The advice below is general canine guidance, and it applies to a big, fluffy livestock guardian as it does to any other dog.
Why a gradual switch matters
Abrupt diet changes can coincide with vomiting, diarrhea or changes in appetite. A slow blend gives the digestive tract time to adjust. General guidance runs from about five to seven days (the American Kennel Club describes roughly that range) to around ten days, which Great Pet Care lays out with several days at each step and a slower version for sensitive dogs.
A sample transition schedule
The percentages below refer to the amount of food fed, not how the bowl looks. Great Pet Care points out that the schedule means quantities, so measuring with a cup is more reliable than eyeballing. A measuring cup is a handy tool here, but it will not prevent upset by itself.

Each stage can last a couple of days if your dog is doing well, which fits the five-to-seven-day range, or longer for a dog with a history of sensitivity. Hold at a stage if stools soften rather than pushing ahead. This is a general template, not a validated Great Pyrenees protocol.
Keep everything else steady
Avoid adding new treats, toppers or rich extras while you switch. If the stool changes, you won’t know whether the new food or the extra is responsible. Cornell’s Meredith Miller, associate clinical professor of small animal medicine, says in the college’s diarrhea guidance: “Owners should avoid excessive treats or rich food until the diarrhea resolves.”

What to watch during the switch
- Stool consistency at each stage, ideally firm and formed.
- Appetite and willingness to eat the blend.
- Vomiting or unusual lethargy.
If your dog gets loose stool
- Return to the previous diet until stools firm up.
- Restart the transition more gradually, over a week or two, as Cornell advises.
- Skip rich treats and table food until stools are normal.
Don’t treat fasting, human medicines or a home-cooked bland diet as routine fixes. Cornell notes that bland diets are not nutritionally balanced for long-term feeding.
When to call the veterinarian
- Diarrhea continues for more than a day or two, per Cornell.
- Symptoms are severe.
- Upset keeps recurring or becomes chronic. Cornell’s guidance on re-evaluating your dog’s diet and its diarrhea page both indicate that chronic stomach upset should be checked for underlying causes rather than handled by repeatedly changing foods.
Puppies, seniors and dogs with existing health conditions are best switched with veterinary input from the start.

Therapeutic gastrointestinal diets
A veterinarian may prescribe a therapeutic GI diet for acute or chronic digestive disease. UC Davis describes these as part of veterinary nutritional management, including a gradual return to the normal diet after treatment. They are a care option for a sick dog, not a default for an ordinary food change.

No source reviewed offers a Great Pyrenees-specific timetable or figures on how often the breed reacts to food changes, so be wary of claims that give one. Your dog’s age, health and your vet’s advice should outweigh any generic schedule.
