If your pet may be acutely unwell or getting worse, stop reading and call your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital now. Don’t delay care to collect paperwork, compare prices or file a complaint. If you’re less worried about the animal’s immediate state and more worried about a recommendation, a communication problem, a bill or an outcome, the steps below will help you get clearer answers and, if needed, another professional view.
First: is your pet in urgent trouble?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that for veterinary advice you should call your veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital or, for possible poisoning, an animal poison-control center. The FDA page says the U.S. centers it lists charge a fee and operate 24/7 (FDA emergency guidance). That guidance is for the United States, so outside the U.S. look up your local emergency clinic and poison service ahead of time.
Don’t send urgent health questions to a regulator. The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine states plainly: “CVM does not provide veterinary advice” (FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine).
Pin down what exactly worries you
Vague unease is hard for anyone to answer. Before you call or go back in, write down:

- Every medicine, supplement and food change, with doses and times.
- The specific part of the plan you don’t understand or doubt: the diagnosis, a test, a procedure, the price, the follow-up, or how you were spoken to.
This checklist is practical advice rather than a requirement from any regulator. Being worried doesn’t prove the care was poor, and a clear question usually gets a clearer answer than a general complaint.
Ask direct, calm questions
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the UK regulator, encourages owners to prepare, ask questions and expect clear explanations, and says an owner may ask whether alternatives exist (RCVS treatment and care). Its guidance for vets describes explaining options, likely outcomes, costs, risks and diagnostic uncertainty (RCVS communication and consent). These are UK professional standards, not a legal entitlement elsewhere, but they make a good model for the conversation anywhere.

- What is the working diagnosis, and what is still uncertain?
- What reasonable options are there, including monitoring where appropriate?
- What are the benefits, risks and likely outcomes of each?
- How time-sensitive is the decision?
- What is the follow-up plan, and what should make me call back sooner?
- What will this cost, and can I have an estimate in writing?
Ask for plain language if a term is unclear. RCVS notes that in non-urgent situations owners generally have time to consider options and to check whether a proposed plan is covered by pet insurance. That is not a promise a policy will pay, so confirm the terms with your insurer directly.
If you’re still unsure: get another view
Ask your current vet about a colleague or specialist
You can ask whether a colleague in the practice or a referral specialist should review the case. RCVS professional guidance describes referral as possibly involving diagnosis, a procedure or treatment, after which the animal returns to the original vet. A second opinion, by contrast, seeks another vet’s views (RCVS referrals and second opinions).

Or seek a second opinion elsewhere
RCVS owner guidance says you can seek another opinion within the same practice or at a different one. Tell the new practice your pet has already been seen, so it can request records and help avoid repeated tests or conflicting medication. Expect an additional fee (RCVS treatment and care).
Bring or ask to have shared the clinical history, lab results, images and medication list.

Questions to ask about any referral or new practice
- Who will handle the case, and what do their credentials mean?
- What will it cost, including follow-up?
- How will the vets coordinate and pass on records and updates?
- Is the animal examined in person, or is advice remote?
- Is there overnight supervision, and who provides continuity?
- What tests or records are needed beforehand?
