Why Is My Cane Corso Puppy Not Gaining Weight? Feeding and Health Checks

A lean Cane Corso puppy may be growing normally, but a flat or falling weight trend deserves attention. Learn how to check food, portions, and health.

A Cane Corso puppy can be lean and still be growing normally, but a weight trend that stays flat or declines should be checked. Weigh your puppy regularly, verify the food and amount being eaten, and arrange a veterinary visit if growth remains poor, weight is lost, appetite is low, or other changes appear. Don’t try to make a large-breed puppy gain quickly by adding extra food or supplements.

Is your Cane Corso puppy too thin, or simply lean?

One weigh-in cannot show whether a puppy is growing well. Record weights over time and look for a gradual upward trend rather than comparing your puppy with breed averages or photos of other dogs. The Merck Veterinary Manual recommends weekly weight monitoring and adjusting feeding so a puppy gains a small amount each week: Merck Veterinary Manual guidance on feeding practices. Published Cane Corso-specific growth-curve data are limited, so a breed chart is not a reliable diagnostic cutoff.

Body condition matters alongside the scale. Cornell describes a lean dog as having ribs that are easy to feel beneath a light layer of fat, a visible waist, and an abdominal tuck. Ribs that are heavily padded or unusually prominent may point to a body-condition concern; ask your veterinarian to assess your puppy rather than aiming for a particular appearance. See Cornell’s large-dog growth and health guidance.

What can cause a puppy not to gain weight?

Poor growth is a sign, not a diagnosis. Possible explanations range from a feeding mismatch to a health problem, and more than one factor may be involved.

  • Too little food or an inaccurate portion: The amount offered may not match the puppy’s needs, or a cup measure may be inconsistent.
  • Food competition: Another pet may eat some of the meal, making the puppy’s actual intake unclear.
  • Food that is not appropriate for growth: An adult-maintenance diet or a food without a suitable large-breed growth statement may not meet the intended life-stage needs.
  • Reduced appetite: A puppy that is eating less than usual may fail to gain for several reasons.
  • Parasites or digestive disease: These are among the medical possibilities described in veterinary guidance; weight alone cannot identify the cause.

Tufts Cummings School advises that puppies and kittens that are not growing normally be carefully examined by a veterinarian. Poor growth can relate to more than one body system. Tufts guidance on weight loss or poor growth and PetMD’s overview of possible causes discuss why an examination may be needed.

Check the food, portion, and actual intake

Choose a diet labeled for large-breed growth

Cane Corsos are large-breed dogs. Select a complete-and-balanced food for growth whose nutritional adequacy statement explicitly includes growth of large-size dogs. Cornell recommends a commercial large-breed puppy diet formulated for appropriate protein, calcium, and calories. The Merck Veterinary Manual and Cornell’s canine health guidance explain why large-breed growth nutrition matters.

When comparing foods, check whether each is complete and balanced for growth including large-size dogs, the feeding directions and calorie information, how well your puppy tolerates it, and your veterinarian’s assessment. A particular brand cannot be assumed to correct poor growth.

Measure what the puppy eats

Write down the portion offered and what remains after meals. VCA recommends weighing portions rather than relying only on a cup measure; feeding the puppy separately can clarify intake if other pets might take food. Count treats as part of the daily food total, and use the label and veterinarian’s advice when setting portions. See VCA’s large- and giant-breed puppy nutrition guidance.

Keep a useful record and arrange a veterinary check

For a veterinary appointment, bring a short record that shows what is happening between weigh-ins:

Why not simply feed more or add supplements?

Do not try to bulk up a large-breed puppy with excess food or added calcium, vitamin D, or protein. Cornell advises against supplementing these nutrients beyond what a balanced diet supplies, while Merck and the American Animal Hospital Association emphasize appropriate growth nutrition and lean body condition. AAHA guidance on age-specific and breed-specific diets provides further context.
