Can Dachshunds Eat Grain-Free Food? Benefits, Risks, and When to Ask a Vet

Grain-free food is not automatically right or wrong for a Dachshund. Here’s what FDA reports do—and don’t—show about DCM, and when to contact your vet.

Yes. A Dachshund can eat grain-free food if it suits the dog’s nutritional and medical needs, but the grain-free label alone does not establish that a food is safer, healthier, or right for your pet. The FDA has investigated reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) involving both grain-free and grain-containing diets; it says the specific connection is unknown. Talk with your veterinarian before changing your Dachshund’s food.

What does the FDA evidence say about grain-free food and DCM?

The FDA has not established that grain-free food causes DCM, nor that every grain-free diet is unsafe. Its investigation found a pattern in case reports, but those reports cannot prove that a food or ingredient caused an individual dog’s disease.

In its review of products associated with reported cases from January 1, 2014, through April 30, 2019, more than 90% were labeled grain-free and 93% contained peas and/or lentils. These are characteristics of products in the reports—not estimates of risk for Dachshunds or proof that peas, lentils, or grain-free diets cause DCM. The FDA says reports included dogs eating grain-containing diets as well, and the specific connection remains unknown. FDA investigation of diet and canine DCM; FDA Q&A on its DCM investigation.

The FDA describes non-hereditary DCM as potentially involving several interacting factors, including genetics, underlying health conditions, and diet. Possible dietary considerations include the food’s nutritional makeup, digestibility, sourcing, processing, formulation, and feeding practices. The agency says pulse ingredients such as peas and lentils have been used in pet foods for many years and that there is no evidence they are inherently dangerous. Earlier FDA testing found similar average levels of several nutrients—including protein, fat, taurine, cystine, and methionine-cystine—in the grain-free and grain-containing products tested. That limited comparison does not resolve whether nutrient availability or other factors contribute to individual cases.

The FDA compiled 1,382 canine DCM reports submitted from January 1, 2014, through November 1, 2022. The agency cautions that reports are voluntary, may not all be verifiable, and do not measure how often DCM occurs in the dog population. They should not be read as a count of confirmed food-caused cases or as an individual dog’s odds of becoming ill. FDA Q&A on its DCM investigation.

Does grain-free food offer a benefit for Dachshunds?

The FDA material does not establish a general health benefit of grain-free food for Dachshunds. A grain-free diet may be appropriate for an individual dog when its nutritional needs and health circumstances support that choice, but the label itself is not evidence of a benefit. Likewise, the FDA evidence does not justify treating all grain-free foods as harmful.

Does being a Dachshund change the risk?

The FDA lists Standard Long-haired Dachshunds among breeds with more than one DCM report. That listing does not establish that Dachshunds have elevated breed-level risk, and it does not show that food caused the reported cases. The FDA notes that it cannot verify every voluntary report and does not have a widespread animal surveillance system that would establish the typical rate of DCM. FDA Q&A on reports and breeds.

DCM is not the same as mitral valve disease

Dachshunds and other small breeds commonly develop myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), a condition distinct from DCM. A breed’s susceptibility to MMVD should not be taken as evidence that it has a higher risk of diet-associated DCM. A veterinarian diagnoses either condition through appropriate physical and cardiac examination. FDA information distinguishing DCM and MMVD.

When should you talk to a veterinarian?

Ask your Dachshund’s veterinarian before changing diets, particularly if your dog has a diagnosed heart condition, another medical need, or concerning symptoms. Contact a veterinarian promptly for possible heart-disease signs such as decreased energy, coughing, difficulty breathing, or collapse. A food change or supplement is not a substitute for diagnosis or veterinary care. FDA signs and guidance for pet owners.
