Before visiting a shelter, check its current adoption instructions: there is no universal document list, approval timeline, fee, or same-day guarantee. Bring the identification and any household or housing records the shelter requests, plan safe transport for your new pet, and use your visit to ask about the animal’s health, behavior, and the support available after adoption.
What should you bring to a shelter to adopt a pet?
Start with the shelter’s own checklist or a phone call. Requirements differ between organizations, and even a nearby shelter may have different rules. The ASPCA puts it plainly: “Every animal welfare organization will have their own unique adoption process, fees and parameters.” Its adoption guidance also notes that some adoptions can happen the same day while others take longer.
- Identification: Bring current government-issued photo ID. The ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City requires unexpired government-issued photo ID showing date of birth; it may also require separate proof of address in some cases. Those are that center’s rules, not nationwide requirements. See its current adoption-center instructions.
- Household or housing information: Be ready to provide the names of household members over 18 and check your building’s pet policy. Bring landlord or building approval, a veterinary reference, or information about current pets only if the shelter asks for them. Requirements vary; Petfinder’s guide to getting a pet online recommends clarifying an organization’s documentation and matching policies.
- Safe transport: Ask what you need for the ride home. ASPCA’s New York City center requires cats and kittens to leave in a secure carrier. Oregon Humane, as one organization-specific example, requires carriers for cats and small animals and asks dog adopters to bring a leash. Check your shelter’s instructions, including any vehicle or containment requirements.
- Time for the visit: Allow for waiting, questions, meeting the animal, and paperwork. The ASPCA New York City center notes that walk-in waits may exceed an hour; Oregon Humane says wait times vary. Neither estimate predicts how long a different shelter will take.
Before setting out, ask whether you need an application or appointment, whether everyone involved in the decision should attend, whether a meet-and-greet with a resident pet is possible or expected, what the fee includes, and whether the animal could go home that day. ASPCA’s walk-in hours and same-day option apply to its New York City center, so confirm current arrangements directly with any shelter you plan to visit.
What happens during the adoption process?
There is no standard sequence. A shelter may review an application before arranging a meeting, or it may let visitors meet available animals first. Some organizations complete adoptions on the day of the visit; others need more time. For example, Oregon Humane describes a process of viewing available pets, completing a brief questionnaire, and meeting an animal; if the adoption proceeds, the adopter can take the pet home. Its meet-and-greets are first-come, first-served, and waits vary. Treat that as one shelter’s process, not a promise about yours.

What should you ask before adopting?
Use the conversation to assess whether the animal’s needs fit your household, not just whether you feel an immediate connection. Shelter staff may have useful records or observations, but an animal’s full history is not always known.

Health and veterinary care
- What veterinary care has the animal already received, and can you have copies of the records?
- Which vaccinations, tests, deworming, or spay/neuter procedures have been completed, and what is still due? These are care topics Petfinder recommends discussing when adopting a dog.
- Are there known medical conditions, medications, or recommended follow-up visits?
- What does the adoption fee include? Confirm items such as sterilization, vaccinations, a microchip, supplies, licensing, and pending appointments individually; inclusions differ by organization.
Behavior and household fit
- What is known about the animal’s temperament and energy level?
- How has the animal behaved around children, dogs, cats, and unfamiliar people? Ask whether the information comes from an assessment, shelter observations, or a foster home.
- What environment and activity level would suit the animal? Consider those needs alongside your household’s schedule, experience, and resident pets.
Policies and support
- What is the shelter’s return or rehoming policy if the adoption does not work out?
- Is post-adoption guidance available, and whom should you contact with questions?
- Are there any requirements or follow-up appointments after pickup?
Petfinder notes that many organizations provide support, but the amount and terms are organization-specific. Ask for the policy rather than relying on a general expectation.
How much should you budget?
Ask the shelter for its current fee and an itemized explanation of what it covers. Fees vary; some organizations also offer reduced fees or waived-fee events. A lower fee does not tell you which veterinary services or supplies are included, so verify those separately. Plan for ongoing veterinary care as well: ASPCA recommends finding a nearby veterinarian for routine checkups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and emergencies.

How should you prepare your home before pickup?
Set up a quiet, contained place where the new pet can settle without being overwhelmed. Clear hazards before bringing the animal home: secure cords, doors, windows, and chewable items, and check plants for pet safety. ASPCA recommends having food and water bowls ready; for a cat, prepare a litter box. Toys and scratching posts can also help provide appropriate enrichment.
Keep supplies appropriate to the animal and follow any instructions from the shelter about food, medication, equipment, or a transition plan. The shelter can tell you whether the animal has been using a particular routine or needs a specific setup.

What should you expect in the first days at home?
Give the pet time and a safe space to observe and decompress. Keep early interactions calm, establish a routine, and introduce household members gradually. Plan introductions to resident pets carefully, following the shelter’s or your veterinarian’s advice. Adjustment takes time, but the available guidance does not establish one timeline that applies to every animal.
Arrange routine veterinary care with a nearby clinic and ask the shelter for any records or follow-up recommendations you need to share. A quiet start and clear plan for care make it easier to respond to the individual animal’s needs.
