The timing, contact method, and services vary, so use your adoption paperwork as the guide to your shelter’s policy—and contact the shelter whenever a question comes up rather than waiting for a scheduled check-in.
Why shelters follow up after adoption
Follow-up is meant to support both you and your new pet. ASPCApro describes its purpose as learning how the adopter and animal are doing and identifying ways to help. A check-in is an opportunity to ask questions and connect with resources; it does not mean that the shelter expects a problem.
Not every shelter is required by the sources here to initiate contact, and there is no universal schedule. Your organization’s adoption paperwork and staff are the best source for its actual policy, return terms, included services, and contact instructions.
When and how a shelter may contact you
Depending on its capacity and your preferences, a shelter may reach out by phone, email, or text. ASPCApro recommends a consistent follow-up plan, but its example schedules differ: one guide suggests checks at two days, ten days, and about six weeks; an ASPCA Adoption Center example uses two days, three weeks, and three months. These are examples, not a promise that your shelter will use those dates.

What the check-in may cover
Expect a friendly conversation about how your pet and household are adjusting. The shelter may ask open-ended questions such as:

- “How is your new pet doing?”
- “How are things going at home?”
- “Are you having any challenges with your new pet?”
- “What do you enjoy most about your new pet?”
- “Is there anything we can help you with?”
You can use the conversation to describe what is going well as well as what feels difficult. Staff may offer advice directly, share written resources, or refer you to a veterinarian or behavior professional if the question needs specialized help.
Raise behavior or health concerns early
It is reasonable to ask for help with house-soiling, separation anxiety, fear, reactivity or aggression, nipping or mouthing, scratching, excessive vocalization, resource guarding, leash pulling, mounting, or repetitive behavior. These concerns do not by themselves mean the adoption has failed. Tell the shelter what you have observed and when it happens; that context can help staff suggest next steps or determine whether a referral is appropriate.

For concerns involving illness or injury, contact a local veterinary provider. Do not wait for a routine shelter check-in if your pet may need urgent care. ASPCA says it does not provide medical emergency advice by phone or email and advises taking a pet to a local veterinarian immediately in a medical emergency.
If the issue is behavioral, ask what support the shelter can offer and whether a qualified behavior professional is appropriate. Shelter records and guidance can provide useful context, including advice for safe, gradual, controlled introductions to children and resident pets. A shelter behavior assessment is not a guarantee of how an animal will behave at home: ASPCA says evidence about predicting post-adoption aggression is inconclusive, and such assessments have not proven highly accurate or precise for that purpose.

Check your shelter’s specific services and deadlines
Benefits and instructions can be organization-specific. For example, Humane Society of Utah describes a free wellness check at a participating veterinary clinic within 30 days and tells adopters whose pets show specified illness symptoms within 14 days to schedule with its shelter veterinarian. It also says it does not reimburse expenses from private veterinarians. Those terms apply to that organization’s policy, not automatically to other shelters; check your own agreement and contact details.
When you review your paperwork or speak with staff, clarify how to reach support outside a scheduled check-in, who handles medical versus behavior questions, whether any services are included or paid, and what local deadlines apply.
