What to look for in a mat for home workouts
A workout is a messy environment for a dog bed: you are moving, dropping weights and rolling out your own mat, and the dog may get up and resettle. Five qualities matter most.
Underside grip
A mat that slides on hardwood or laminate gets abandoned or becomes a hazard when the dog steps on its edge. Look for a distinct non-slip base fabric. “Non-slip” is a manufacturer’s feature description, not a guarantee on every floor, so test any mat on your own surface before you start a session near it.
Cushioning

FitPaws K9 FitMat: a different job
FitPaws sells this for canine fitness and rehabilitation-style exercises, with a non-slip texture and sensory bumps. The maker says it is for dogs only and not for unsupervised use. It is a training tool you use with your dog, not a place for the dog to doze while you do squats. Don’t buy it as a bed substitute.

How to set up the spot
- Pick a corner or wall edge at a safe distance from swinging weights, jump ropes and floor-based movements.
- Place the mat on the intended floor and press on the corners to check it doesn’t creep.
- Make sure the dog can lie down fully extended without hanging over the edge.
- Bring the dog to the mat calmly before you start, and reward settling there with a chew or treat you’ve already cleared for safety.
- Keep the dog off any exercise-only mat unless you are actively supervising.
No mat guarantees that a dog will settle. That depends on training, exercise level and temperament, so expect to reinforce the habit over several sessions.
What claims to treat with caution
Vendor language about joint support is marketing unless independently verified. For example, The Red Dog Company’s Working Dog Mat page attributes the statement “these Mats are designed to provide optimum joint support” to veterinarian Alison Lambert, MA VetMB MRCVS. That is a quote about that company’s mats on its own page, not independent proof and not a statement about dog mats in general. We found no independent comparative tests of dog mats for comfort or injury prevention, so do not expect any mat to prevent injury or treat a medical condition. If your dog has mobility problems, ask your vet about bedding.
