The viral-looking skiing story is easy to misread: recent coverage shows Lumi, a Samoyed, riding down a mountain secured in his owner’s backpack—not a confirmed ski-lift ride. DogTime describes a cable car in the clip, while the Los Angeles Times focuses on the downhill run. A separate, documented chairlift ride involved Zuma, a working avalanche-rescue dog at Colorado’s Loveland Ski Area.
What does the video show?
The closest match to the headline is Lumi, a 50-pound Samoyed owned by Jackie Jacob. The Los Angeles Times reports that Jacob carried him in a backpack while skiing downhill. She said she chose the carrier because she did not want Lumi running loose beside other skiers. The paper does not report that he rode a chairlift. The Los Angeles Times account identifies the dog and describes the outing.
DogTime’s description of the clip says Lumi appears with Jacob in a cable car before the downhill run, wearing goggles and secured in the backpack. That is a secondary description of the footage, not confirmation that he rode a chairlift. DogTime reported more than 175,000 likes within 24 hours of posting its account; that engagement figure is DogTime’s report. DogTime’s video report describes the cable-car scene.
Why was Lumi in a backpack?
Jacob told the Los Angeles Times that she had skied since childhood and had competed in freestyle mogul skiing. She had wanted to take Lumi skiing for years, and said she trained him to stay calm and comfortable in the backpack. “He’s a snow dog, so he LOVES the cold and snow,” she said, describing the first outing as “just pure happiness.”

Has a dog actually ridden a ski chairlift?
Yes. In 2021, CBS Colorado reported that Zuma, an avalanche-rescue dog at Loveland Ski Area, rode Chet’s Dream chairlift with his handler, Tanner Franti. Zuma was a working patrol dog, not a pet on a recreational outing. CBS Colorado’s report on Zuma documents that separate chairlift story.

Can dogs ride ski lifts?
There is no single rule that applies to every ski resort. Policies vary by mountain, lift, and circumstance, so owners should check directly with the resort before bringing a dog. For example, a July 28, 2024 policy covering Perisher, Falls Creek, and Hotham states: “Animals are not permitted on lifts. This is for the safety of the animal and guests.” That policy applies to those named Australian resorts, not every ski area. Read the Perisher, Falls Creek, and Hotham lift policy.
