You can work out at home safely with a dog by clearing a level, well-lit space, keeping the dog out of your active movement area, and checking its location before you stand, walk, or change position. Give your dog a calm place to rest or an appropriate indoor activity, and tailor any exercise for the dog to its age, health, breed, and fitness.
Set up a clear workout area
Choose a level, well-lit, ventilated spot with enough room to move your arms freely while standing and to stretch your whole body on the floor. Harvard Health recommends clearing clutter, throw rugs, and nearby furniture with sharp corners. A nonslip exercise mat can make floor exercises more comfortable, but it does not replace a clear floor or keep a dog away from your movements. Harvard Health’s home-workout guidance is general exercise advice, not a test of a particular arrangement for exercising around dogs.
- Move toys, food bowls, cords, and loose items out of the workout area.
- Keep the dog’s bed, resting place, or enrichment activity outside the space where you will step, stretch, or lie down.
- Before standing, walking, or changing position, look for the dog and make sure it is not underfoot.
The National Institute on Aging’s fall-prevention guidance puts the key habit plainly: “Don’t let your cat or dog trip you. Know where your pet is whenever you’re standing or walking.” The location check is especially important during transitions, when you may be focused on an exercise or moving backward.
Decide where your dog will be while you exercise
For a predictable workout, choose a calm, safe arrangement that suits your dog and home. You might have the dog rest in another room or settle outside the movement area with a suitable enrichment activity. These are practical ways to apply pet-location safety guidance, not arrangements that have been individually tested or proven best for every dog.

If your dog becomes distressed when separated, repeatedly enters your movement space, or guards food or toys, do not try to solve the problem through rough play or by forcing an interaction. Adapt the workout location or timing, and seek qualified veterinary or behavior guidance if the behavior creates a safety concern.
Give your dog an indoor activity that fits
A dog does not need to join your workout to stay occupied. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes indoor options that can provide mental stimulation or movement with little equipment:

- Hide-and-seek: Hide yourself or a favorite toy and invite the dog to search.
- Scent and treat searches: Hide treats in boxes or around a safe room, or use a snuffle mat or treat-dispensing toy.
- Short training drills: Practice familiar cues or simple movement exercises in a clear area.
- Indoor agility or canine freestyle: Try these only when the space and dog are suitable; household objects can substitute for some specialty equipment.
Use safe objects, keep the floor clear, and supervise activities that involve toys or treats. An activity that keeps one dog content may excite or frustrate another, so choose based on your dog’s temperament and the space available. AKC’s suggestions are general ideas, not a substitute for veterinary advice about a dog’s individual exercise needs.
Match dog exercise to the individual dog
There is no single daily exercise prescription for every dog. AKC says needs vary with age, breed, health, and energy level. Puppies generally do better with several short activity periods, while seniors may need gentler movement adjusted to what they can comfortably manage. If your dog has a health condition—or you are considering a new or strenuous routine—ask your veterinarian what is appropriate. AKC specifically identifies conditions such as hip dysplasia and heart or respiratory problems as reasons to discuss an exercise plan with a veterinarian.

AKC’s FIT DOG materials give examples of walking schedules, including 15-minute sessions 10 times a week for three months and 30-minute sessions five times a week for three months. The first is described as suitable for senior dogs or dogs starting exercise. These are program examples, not universal targets and not prescriptions for indoor workouts. Do not use them to override advice based on your dog’s health or ability.
Keep play calm around exercise equipment
Exercise equipment, food, and toys can create situations in which a dog feels startled or protective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says dogs may bite when scared, nervous, eating, protecting toys or puppies, or unwell. It advises: “Never encourage your dog to play aggressively or roughhouse.” Keep your workout separate from rough play, and do not disturb a dog that is eating or resting. Children should always be supervised around dogs, including familiar family dogs. CDC dog-bite prevention guidance addresses dog interactions generally, not workout-specific risk.

When a dog treadmill may—and may not—fit
A dog treadmill is an optional indoor exercise tool, not a requirement for home exercise. AKC describes it as a possible option, especially for high-energy breeds, but emphasizes careful training and says it does not replace outdoor walks. Suitability depends on the individual dog, its health, training, and comfort with the equipment. Do not put a dog on a moving treadmill without a gradual introduction and close supervision; check with a veterinarian if health or mobility is a concern.
