For a porch where a dog or cat may claw or push against the mesh, start by comparing pet-resistant vinyl-coated polyester screening with ordinary insect screen. Phifer says its PetScreen is made for porch enclosures and is tear- and puncture-resistant, but that describes resistance to damage—not a guarantee that the mesh will contain an animal or prevent a fall.
Choose the mesh for your pet’s likely contact with it
Pet-resistant vinyl-coated polyester
PetScreen is a practical starting point when paws or claws are likely to meet the screen. Phifer identifies its PetScreen as vinyl-coated polyester for porch enclosures and describes it as tear- and puncture-resistant: Phifer PetScreen product specifications. Those are manufacturer statements about its product, not independent comparative test results or a promise that it can withstand every pet or impact.
Standard fiberglass insect screen
If pet contact is limited and a relatively unobstructed view or lower cost matters more, standard fiberglass insect screen may be worth considering. A BLACK+DECKER porch-screening guide describes fiberglass as common and easy to work with, and pet screening as stronger than standard mesh: BLACK+DECKER screened-in porch guide. The guide does not establish a universal strength difference or service-life comparison.
Balance visibility, airflow, and sun control
Pet-resistant mesh can make the view and airflow feel different from ordinary screen. Phifer lists PetScreen at approximately 36% openness and approximately 64% UV blockage; these are manufacturer specifications, with no publication date stated on the product page: Phifer PetScreen product specifications. Consider those figures alongside how much view and air movement you want through the porch.

If pets mostly approach the screen near the floor, one possible layout is pet-resistant mesh on the lower sections and a different screen above, perhaps divided by an existing mid-rail or handrail. BLACK+DECKER suggests this as an option, not a layout that suits every enclosure or pet: BLACK+DECKER screened-in porch guide.
For a porch where reducing sun is also a priority, compare a product designed for sun control rather than applying another product’s specification to PetScreen. Phifer says its SunTex 80/90 line blocks 80–90% of the sun’s rays; that manufacturer claim applies to SunTex 80/90, not PetScreen: Phifer pet-screen guidance.

Measure the openings and confirm frame compatibility
Phifer lists PetScreen in standard widths of 30, 36, 48, 60, 72, and 96 inches, and roll lengths of 25, 50, and 100 feet. These are product options, not a substitute for measuring each porch bay or checking that the mesh works with the intended frame system: Phifer PetScreen product specifications.
- Measure each opening and determine the mesh width and total length needed.
- Check the frame or screening system’s requirements before ordering.
- If replacing screen yourself, use spline that fits both the frame channel and the mesh thickness. The correct diameter depends on those parts; the sources do not specify a universal size.

Do not treat screening as a pet-safety barrier
Pet-resistant describes resistance to screen damage; it does not establish that a screen is safe containment for an animal that leans, climbs, or pushes hard. The manufacturer descriptions cited here do not provide fall-prevention or animal-containment testing. If a pet could put its weight against the mesh, do not rely on the screen alone as a secure enclosure or substitute for supervision.
