The main health question to discuss with a breeder and veterinarian is hearing: some white cats, particularly those with blue eyes, have a higher risk of deafness. These are breed tendencies and risk factors, not guarantees about an individual cat.
What is a Turkish Angora’s temperament like?
Breed profiles from The International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) describe Turkish Angoras as active, curious, intelligent, sociable, and affectionate. They often enjoy being involved in household activity and playing with people. TICA says the breed responds best to “firm, but gentle handling.”
A busy, inquisitive cat may seek high places or make its own entertainment when under-stimulated. Cat trees, elevated perches, and interactive toys are practical ways to offer climbing and play, as noted by PetMD. These are enrichment options, not special medical requirements.
Consider how much company and interaction you can offer. TICA describes the breed as sociable and suggests it may suit a home where someone is around, or where the cat has companionship if people are away for much of the day. Breed descriptions are broad tendencies: socialization, health, and individual personality all affect how a particular cat behaves.

How much grooming does a Turkish Angora need?
The coat is semi-long and silky, with little or no undercoat according to TICA. The breed profiles generally describe it as relatively easy to maintain and not especially prone to matting, but they differ on how often to comb:

Use these recommendations as starting points, not a fixed rule. Introduce gentle combing early, check for loose hair and tangles, and adjust the routine to your cat’s coat, age, and shedding. A fine-toothed cat comb or a slicker brush is sufficient for routine upkeep; elaborate grooming equipment is usually unnecessary.

Other routine care
TICA’s general care guidance also covers weekly nail trimming, eye cleaning, and dental care with toothpaste approved by a veterinarian. Individual cats differ in what they tolerate, so introduce handling gradually and ask your veterinarian for advice if nail, eye, or dental care is difficult.
What health issues should owners know about?
The breed profiles do not establish that Turkish Angoras commonly develop a particular illness. CFA says the breed is not known for specific health problems, while TICA advises breeders to screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition. A breed profile cannot diagnose HCM or determine an individual cat’s risk; ask the breeder what screening has been done and discuss appropriate veterinary care for the cat.

Deafness risk in some white cats
CFA and TICA note that some white cats, particularly those with blue eyes, may be deaf in one or both ears. PetMD explains that hereditary deafness is associated with all-white cats with two blue eyes or one blue eye, regardless of breed. Coat and eye color indicate a risk association, not a diagnosis: appearance alone cannot establish whether a cat can hear.
TICA and CFA discuss BAER testing as a way to assess hearing in white kittens; availability and practice may vary by region. If you are considering a kitten, ask whether hearing was assessed and request the results. If you suspect hearing loss in a cat, arrange an examination with a veterinarian rather than relying on appearance or behavior alone.

Questions to ask a breeder or veterinarian
- What health screening has been performed, including any HCM screening recommended for the parents?
- If the cat is white, has its hearing been assessed, and are test results available?
- Which routine examinations or follow-up are appropriate for this individual cat?
- What grooming and handling has the kitten already experienced?
For history, TICA traces the breed to Ankara, historically known as Angora, and describes efforts to preserve it after it was used in Persian breeding programs in the early 1900s. That background helps explain the name, but it does not change the practical care needs of an individual cat.
