Stop the activity and offer your older dog a rest if they become out of breath or keep trying to sit or lie down. Afterward, trouble lying down or getting up, an unusually “sloppy” sit, irritability, excitability, or slower responses to familiar cues can signal overexertion. If these signs appear, do not resume exercise; contact your veterinarian for advice. Persistent changes in stamina also deserve attention rather than being dismissed as old age.

Signs your senior dog needs a break

During a walk or play, pause if your dog is out of breath, reluctant to continue, or repeatedly sits or lies down. These are practical stop signs—not a cue to encourage them to push through. Let your dog rest and observe whether they recover comfortably.

After activity, look for a change from your dog’s usual behavior. VCA notes that possible overexertion signs include slower responses to familiar cues or an invitation to interact, irritability or unusual excitability, difficulty lying down or rising, and an abnormal posture such as a “sloppy” sit. If you see these, stop exercise and seek veterinary advice. (VCA: Dog Behavior and Training – Play and Exercise)

Ordinary tiredness, overexertion, or heat illness?

Ordinary fatigue should improve with rest. Breathlessness during activity, repeated attempts to sit or lie down, or unusual behavior during recovery mean your dog needs to stop and may need veterinary advice. Heat illness is more urgent: exposure to hot or humid conditions alongside heavy panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, confusion, or collapse can indicate a dangerous problem. Cornell describes heatstroke as a life-threatening emergency. (Cornell: Heatstroke: A medical emergency)

Watch for overheating

Heavy panting, drooling, seeking shade, whining, reluctance to play, and unusual lethargy can be warning signs of overheating. Red or dark red gums are another concerning sign. Older dogs are among those at higher risk of heatstroke, and strenuous activity in hot or humid weather can add risk. (UC Davis: Summer Pet Hazards; Cornell: Heatstroke: A medical emergency)

Know when it is an emergency

Seek emergency veterinary care immediately for difficulty breathing, marked weakness, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, confusion, seizures, or collapse. Cornell identifies these as heatstroke warning signs, and respiratory distress also requires urgent attention. Do not wait to see whether severe signs pass on their own. (Cornell: Summer heat safety tips for dogs; Cornell: Recognizing and responding to canine respiratory distress)

Why a lasting drop in stamina needs a veterinary assessment

A new or persistent loss of stamina is not a diagnosis of normal aging. Pain, osteoarthritis, metabolic disease, and heart disease may contribute. Reluctance to exercise, lethargy, panting while resting, difficulty getting comfortable, altered sleep, or behavior changes are reasons to arrange a veterinary assessment. A veterinarian can investigate the cause rather than assuming age is responsible. (VCA: How to Recognize Pain in Aging Dogs; Cornell: Recognizing pain in dogs)

Make activity easier to recover from

  • Pause at the first clear fatigue sign, and let your dog rest rather than urging them to continue.
  • Choose cooler parts of the day, take breaks, and provide shade and access to water. Avoid strenuous activity in hot or humid weather.
  • Bring water on outdoor outings; a portable bowl can make it easier to offer a drink, but it does not prevent or treat heat illness. (UC Davis: Summer Pet Hazards; VCA: Running with Your Dog)
  • Ask your veterinarian what routine is suitable for your dog, particularly before introducing vigorous exercise. There is no single walk duration or distance that fits every senior dog.

What to do when your dog’s energy changes

  1. Stop and assess. If your dog is out of breath or repeatedly sits or lies down, end the activity and let them rest.
  2. Note the change. Record when the lower energy or stamina began, what your dog was doing, and the signs you observed. This timing can help your veterinarian assess the problem. (VCA Urgent Care: Urgent Care for Lethargy)
  3. Arrange veterinary care for a persistent change. Contact your veterinarian about a new or ongoing stamina decline, suspected pain, panting at rest, or other changes in sleep or behavior.
  4. Go to emergency care for severe signs. Collapse, seizures, confusion, marked weakness, difficulty breathing, suspected heatstroke, inability to get up or walk, or difficulty waking warrant emergency attention. (VCA Urgent Care: Urgent Care for Lethargy)
