Neither short walks nor longer walks are right for every senior dog. Choose an outing length your dog can manage comfortably, keep the pace gentle, and use how your dog moves during the walk and recovers afterward to guide adjustments. There is no universal number of minutes or daily walks that suits all older dogs.
How to choose between short and longer walks
Start with your dog’s current comfort and mobility, not a target distance. A short outing may suit a dog with arthritis, other mobility problems, or limited stamina. A longer walk may be reasonable if your dog stays comfortable throughout and returns to their usual condition afterward. The American Kennel Club (AKC) advises that dogs with mobility issues may benefit from short walks, while VCA recommends tracking how long an individual dog can comfortably walk.
Consider these factors together when deciding how long to go:
- Comfortable duration and recovery: Note how long your dog walks easily and whether they seem stiff or unusually tired afterward.
- Mobility and health: A diagnosis, joint problems, or a change in movement can affect what is appropriate.
- Pace and frequency: Slower movement and shorter, more frequent outings may work better for some dogs than one longer walk.
- Weather and footing: Watch your dog’s response to conditions and choose surfaces they can manage safely.
- Rest options: A break or a lower-impact alternative can keep an outing from becoming too strenuous.
The AKC’s suggestion of 10–15 minutes applies to an adult dog that has been inactive or is out of shape; it is not a general walking target for senior dogs. VCA’s 10–15 minute sessions refer specifically to senior agility training, not everyday walks.

What to watch for during a walk
Let your dog set the pace. In an AKC article, Dr. Wilson puts it simply: “The pace just needs to be slower.” The same source says slow, frequent movement may benefit dogs with arthritis. Adjust the outing if your dog starts limping, stops, lies down, pants hard, or struggles with curbs—signs the AKC identifies as possible pain or fatigue.
Walking can also provide sensory stimulation, so an outing need not be long to be worthwhile. On a route that is becoming too strenuous, a wagon or stroller can offer a rest without ending the time outside. These are optional aids, not necessities for every dog.

Use recovery to adjust the next outing
Check how your dog moves after returning home as well as during the walk. If they are stiff afterward, shorten future outings. VCA recommends keeping track of energy and comfortable walking duration; a significant decline can reflect pain, heart disease, or another illness and deserves a veterinary discussion.
Do not assume new reluctance to walk, limping, reduced stamina, difficulty rising, or other movement changes are simply signs of age. VCA’s veterinary pain guidance explains that reduced walking stamina can have multiple causes that require assessment. As the authors put it, “Senior dogs slow down even more, which is normal — old age is not a disease.”

Ask a veterinarian before starting a new exercise plan
VCA recommends a veterinary assessment before introducing new physical activity to an older dog, particularly one with joint issues. A veterinarian can help determine whether a change in stamina or movement needs attention and what activity is appropriate. Introduce new activity gradually rather than making a sudden increase.
For walks, VCA recommends using a sturdy 4–6 foot leash attached to a properly fitting collar or harness. A well-fitted harness may be worth considering for some larger dogs with mobility issues, but the right setup depends on the individual dog.

Choose the outing your dog can enjoy safely
The AKC describes walking as low-impact and recommends paying attention to weather, pace, and your dog’s response during and after exercise. It identifies grass and sand as preferable footing. If your dog tires, take a break or shorten the route; swimming may be another option only if it is safe and suitable for that dog.
There is no evidence-based, universal walk duration, daily frequency, or maximum distance for senior dogs in the guidance cited here. Let comfort, mobility, recovery, and veterinary advice—not age alone or a fixed minute count—determine the plan.
