Check your Turkish Angora’s coat weekly and comb it gently with a fine-toothed cat comb; if the coat tangles, sheds heavily, or becomes fuller, groom more often. The breed’s silky, single or nearly single coat is less prone to mats than many longhair coats, but it can still tangle.
Why a Turkish Angora’s coat needs regular checks
The Cat Fanciers’ Association describes the Turkish Angora as having a single coat and says it is not prone to matting. TICA describes a silky coat with a thin or absent undercoat that rarely mats. These traits can make the breed easier to maintain than many longhaired cats, but they do not make it mat-proof.
The coat also changes with the season. TICA notes that an adult may have a mane, britches, and a plumed tail in winter, with a shorter coat in summer. Check the coat your cat has now rather than relying on a fixed year-round schedule.
How often to comb a Turkish Angora
Breed and veterinary guidance varies: TICA recommends a weekly comb-through, VCA advises brushing once or twice a week, and CFA says two or three combings a month may be enough to control shedding in younger cats. CFA also notes that older cats may need more frequent combing. These are care recommendations, not guarantees that a particular schedule will prevent mats for every cat.

A practical baseline is to check the coat once a week and comb gently wherever it catches or feels tangled. Increase combing if you find tangles, if shedding is noticeable, as the coat grows fuller, or as your cat ages. If a young cat’s coat stays smooth, CFA’s less frequent guidance may be sufficient for that individual.
Which grooming tool to use
A fine-toothed cat comb is a straightforward choice for routine combing and checking whether the coat catches. VCA also lists a slicker brush as an option for removing excess hair and helping prevent mats. The sources do not establish that one tool is better in every case, so choose one your cat tolerates and use it gently.

A gentle routine for checking and combing
- Check weekly. Run your hands gently over the coat and look for areas that feel caught or tangled, paying attention to the fuller coat your cat may have in winter.
- Comb gently. Use a fine-toothed cat comb, or a slicker brush, to remove loose hair and check the coat. Do not force the tool through resistance.
- Adjust to what you find. If the coat stays smooth, continue checking regularly. If tangles appear, comb those areas more often and reassess the routine.
What to do about a tight or painful mat
Do not pull a comb through a mat that is tight, painful, or close to the skin, and do not try to cut it out with scissors. Routine breed-care guidance does not establish a safe home removal method for these mats. Ask a veterinarian or qualified groomer for help.
