Introduce a new cat gradually: start in a quiet room with the door closed, exchange scents before allowing pets to see one another, then progress to calm barrier sessions and short supervised meetings. Move forward only when the animals are relaxed at the current stage; there is no fixed timetable that suits every home.
Prepare a quiet base room for the new cat
Before bringing the cat into shared areas, set up a room where they can settle without being approached by resident pets. Provide food, water, a litter box, bedding, and familiar toys or a scratching surface. Keep the door closed at first. A home-base room gives the newcomer a predictable place to retreat while they adjust; gradually open access to more of the home as they become comfortable, as advised by the ASPCA and International Cat Care.
Keep resident pets and the new cat separated initially. Maintain the resident animals’ normal routines and give each pet calm, positive attention. Make sure neither animal has to pass the other to reach food, water, a litter box, or a safe resting place.
Introduce cats or dogs in gradual stages
1. Exchange scents
Once the new cat is settling in, swap bedding or other items that carry each animal’s scent. Let them investigate at their own pace; do not bring them together to sniff one another. When both are comfortable, allow each pet to explore the other’s space at separate times, with the animals still apart. VCA recommends scent exchange and location swapping as steps in introducing adult cats, and International Cat Care recommends scent exchange for kittens after they have adjusted.

2. Let them see each other through a barrier
Use a secure gate, screen, or slightly opened door that prevents contact. Begin far enough away that both animals can remain calm. Pair a relaxed look or sniff with food or play if the pets are comfortable taking part. Over time, you can adjust the distance or opening according to their responses. The Humane Society of the United States and VCA recommend controlled visual exposure rather than an immediate face-to-face introduction.
3. Hold brief, supervised meetings
Move to shared space only after the animals have had calm sessions through the barrier. Keep meetings short and supervised, allow each pet to choose how close to get, and provide clear escape routes. Do not hold the animals together or make them approach. End the session while they are still coping well rather than waiting for tension to build.

For a cat and a dog, add leash control and a refuge
Before close contact, refresh the dog’s calm settling and leash skills. Keep the dog behind a barrier during early visual sessions, then use a leash for initial shared-space meetings. Give the cat access to a dog-free room and places to climb or hide where the dog cannot corner them. A dog that stays calm around a still cat may react differently when the cat moves, so watch for chasing or fixation. VCA advises consulting a veterinary behaviorist if you are concerned about whether your dog can safely mingle with a cat.
Use comfort, not a calendar, to decide when to progress
There is no universal introduction schedule. VCA notes that a new adult cat may need a few days to get comfortable in a safe space, while later steps can take longer. International Cat Care suggests exchanging kitten scents for about a week if possible. These are examples, not deadlines or guarantees.

Continue to the next stage when both animals can stay relaxed during the current one. If either pet stops eating, hides persistently, repeatedly reacts aggressively, or cannot disengage, slow down and restore separation. One hiss alone does not prove the relationship cannot work; pay attention to the pattern, intensity, and recovery after each interaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reduce competition and preserve retreat options
Keep each animal’s supplies and resting areas distinct while they are adjusting. For cats, VCA’s rule of thumb is one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Place resources where a cat can reach them without being cornered, and provide elevated hiding or resting places—particularly in a home with a dog. An extra litter box or elevated cat perch can help make those separate options practical.

What to do if an introduction goes badly
If you see hissing, growling, swatting, escalating fixation, or a chase, calmly separate the animals and return to the last stage that was going well. Do not punish them or let them “work it out”; a rushed encounter can make future interactions harder. If pets are fighting, do not reach between them, since redirected aggression can injure you. Use a barrier or another safe way to separate them.
Contact a veterinarian for persistent aggression, a sudden change in behavior, or an injury. A veterinarian can check for health factors and advise on behavior support or referral. If tension between cats remains chronic despite careful separation and reintroduction, permanent separation in the home or rehoming may be more humane than forcing stressful coexistence; the ASPCA discusses these options. For a dog with strong chasing behavior, seek veterinary behavior guidance before allowing closer contact.
