Turkish Angoras do not need hearing tests just because they are Turkish Angoras. Testing is worth discussing with a veterinarian if your cat is white—especially with blue eyes—if you suspect a hearing problem, or if a breeding or registry rule calls for objective proof. A cat’s appearance and everyday reactions cannot confirm that both ears hear normally.
Does every Turkish Angora need a hearing test?
No universal screening schedule is established for every pet Turkish Angora. The breed comes in multiple colours and patterns, and available breed-specific evidence does not support testing every Angora solely because of its breed. White coat colour, particularly with one or two blue eyes, is a general risk marker for congenital deafness in cats, not a diagnosis. The International Cat Association notes that some white cats may have full or partial deafness that a BAER test determines: TICA’s Turkish Angora information.
What the breed-specific figures can—and cannot—tell you
A 2009 peer-reviewed study assessed 84 white purebred cats presented for routine pre-breeding hearing evaluation. Seventeen had deafness in one or both ears: nine in both ears and eight in one. Among the 11 Turkish Angoras in that selected group, one had unilateral deafness; the other 10 had normal hearing, and none had bilateral deafness. Because this was a small subgroup of white cats referred for pre-breeding evaluation—not a random sample of Turkish Angoras—those results are not a prevalence estimate for the breed or for Angoras of all coat colours. A 2019 UK study article describes BAER as the gold-standard hearing-function test for domestic animals and cautions that commonly repeated breed figures may be anecdotal or based on methods that miss one-sided loss. It cites an 11% Turkish Angora figure for 474 cats as anecdotal, not as a reliable BAER-confirmed prevalence. The 2019 UK study article.

Can a Turkish Angora be deaf in one ear without obvious signs?
Yes. A cat with hearing in one ear may still react to sounds, so ordinary observation can miss unilateral deafness. The Merck Veterinary Manual states: “Unilateral deafness in animals may go undetected without brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) testing.” Merck Veterinary Manual: Deafness in Cats.
Not reacting to sounds, startling when approached, or seeming to rely more on sight or vibration can be reasons to raise a concern with your veterinarian. These observations are not a home diagnosis: a cat may respond to some sounds while still having impaired hearing in one ear. What does a BAER test check?
BAER stands for brainstem auditory evoked response. It is an electrodiagnostic test that records the nervous system’s response to sound stimuli. Testing can assess each ear separately, which allows it to identify unilateral as well as bilateral hearing loss. - Your cat is white, particularly with blue eyes: ask whether objective hearing assessment is appropriate; colour indicates risk, not certainty.
- You suspect hearing loss: describe what you have noticed and ask whether testing is warranted. A response to sound does not rule out loss in one ear.
- You are considering breeding: ask what evidence of hearing status is needed for your plans and the relevant registry.
- Your cat has a different coat colour and no suspected hearing issue: breed alone does not establish a need for routine testing; discuss any individual concerns with your veterinarian.
Registry rules are specific, not universal
The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) says that before progeny may be registered from a white cat of any breed, certification of freedom from unilateral or bilateral deafness by BAER or OAE must be submitted. That is the GCCF’s policy, not a rule that applies to every registry or region. Check the current requirements of the registry involved and ask your veterinarian how to meet them.
