Choose a veterinarian before your pet needs urgent care. Compare nearby practices for your pet’s species and health needs, appointment access, emergency arrangements, services and referrals, communication, costs, and how your pet responds to the team. Then speak with or visit your strongest candidates and confirm exactly where your pet would go for care after hours.

Build a shortlist around your pet’s needs

Start with a few local practices rather than choosing from a single review or the lowest quoted fee. Ask people who know your pet or its species for recommendations; the American Kennel Club also suggests asking trusted owners, breeders, trainers, groomers, and veterinary societies. Use suggestions to identify clinics to investigate, not as a substitute for checking their services and policies yourself.

Before calling, note your pet’s species, age, medical history, preventive-care needs, and any condition that may require ongoing or specialized care. Confirm that each practice treats that species and can meet those needs. Do not assume a clinic that sees dogs and cats also treats birds, reptiles, or other non-traditional pets.

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends selecting a veterinarian before a pet becomes ill or needs emergency care and getting acquainted with the practice. Its Choosing a Veterinarian brochure suggests asking about hours, staff, fees, services, emergency coverage, the facility, and professional affiliations.

Compare practices on the same questions

Use the same checklist for every clinic so you can compare answers rather than relying on a general impression. Where a clinic’s answer depends on your pet’s records or an examination, ask what information it needs to give you a useful answer.

  • Species and experience: Does the practice see your pet’s species? Does the team have relevant experience with your pet’s age, health history, or special needs?
  • Services and referrals: Which preventive, diagnostic, surgical, and other services are available onsite? When does the practice refer patients to specialists, and how are records shared?
  • Access: What are the regular hours and typical waits for appointments? How can you schedule or contact the team? Can you request a particular veterinarian, and who provides care when that person is unavailable?
  • Urgent and after-hours care: How are urgent calls handled during business hours and when the practice is closed? Which emergency facility receives referrals?
  • Costs and payment: What are the fees for routine care? Can the clinic provide written estimates for procedures? Which payment methods are accepted, and are payment plans or financial-assistance options available?
  • Insurance: Does the clinic work with your insurer, and how are claims or reimbursement handled? Ask your insurer to confirm the actual policy coverage and reimbursement terms.
  • Communication and handling: Does the team answer questions respectfully and interact comfortably with your pet? Can you tour the facility or see areas relevant to your pet’s care?
  • Continuity: How can you obtain or transfer records if your pet sees a specialist or you change practices?

Check emergency arrangements before you need them

“After-hours care” can mean different things at different practices. Ask whether the clinic takes emergency calls itself, uses an answering service, has another veterinarian covering, or directs clients to a separate emergency hospital. Write down the emergency facility’s name, address, and contact details, and ask whether the clinic sends records or otherwise coordinates with it.

Also clarify what to do during regular hours if your pet suddenly becomes ill or injured: whom to call, whether to call before arriving, and how the clinic decides whether to see your pet or direct you elsewhere. These arrangements can affect access and continuity, so get concrete instructions rather than assuming the regular veterinarian will be available.

Visit the clinic and observe the interaction

If possible, arrange a preliminary visit before your pet needs care. Notice whether the facility appears clean, orderly, and welcoming, and whether staff respond to questions clearly and respectfully. Observe how the team handles your pet, but remember that one visit cannot establish how every appointment or urgent situation will go.

Ask about the clinic’s approach to preventive care and treatment decisions, and how the veterinarian explains options, benefits, risks, and costs. Professional affiliations, credentials, and continuing education may be useful to discuss where relevant; a membership alone does not show that a practice is the right fit for your animal.

Understand the relationship and verify local rules

A continuing relationship with a veterinarian matters for more than convenience. The American Animal Hospital Association’s VCPR position describes responsibilities that include making medical judgments, having sufficient knowledge of the patient, arranging ongoing care or coverage, and keeping legible records that support continuity. AAHA’s position describes an in-person examination within the prior 12 months as part of its definition, with more frequent examinations when a patient’s circumstances require.

That is AAHA’s stated position, not a universal legal rule. Licensing requirements and legal definitions of a veterinarian-client-patient relationship can differ by jurisdiction, so check the rules where you live. Ask the clinic how it establishes an ongoing relationship and handles follow-up or coverage when your veterinarian is unavailable.

Use accreditation, reviews, and referrals as screening tools

AAHA offers a For Pet Parents resource hub with an accredited-hospital lookup and species-focused resources, including information for exotic pets and birds. Accreditation can be one point of comparison to ask about; the cited guidance does not establish that accreditation is required for every suitable practice or guarantees a particular outcome.

Online reviews and personal recommendations can help you decide whom to call, but they cannot tell you whether a clinic treats your pet’s species, has workable emergency coverage, provides the services you need, or communicates in a way that suits you. Verify those details directly with the practice.

Call script for comparing clinics

You can adapt this script when contacting each practice:

“I’m looking for a primary veterinarian for my [species], [age], who has [relevant health history or needs]. Do you see this species and provide care for those needs? What services are available onsite, and when do you refer to a specialist? What are your appointment hours and usual wait, and who covers if our veterinarian is unavailable? How do you handle urgent calls during the day and after hours, and which emergency hospital do you use? Can you explain routine fees, written estimates, payment options, and how you work with insurance? May I visit the clinic, and how can I get my pet’s records if we need a referral?”

Write down the answers, the person you spoke with, and any details you need to verify. If a clinic cannot answer a question immediately, ask who can clarify it and when to follow up.

Make the choice based on fit, not a single signal

Choose the practice that can meet your pet’s needs and gives you confidence in its access, emergency plan, communication, costs, and continuity arrangements. A low fee, positive review, professional membership, or accreditation can inform your decision, but none by itself determines whether the practice is right for your pet.

Before registering, make sure you know how to book routine care, what to do in an urgent situation, where to go after hours, how estimates and payment work, and how records will be shared. Clinic availability, hours, fees, insurance arrangements, and local legal requirements vary; confirm the details directly with the practice and relevant authorities.
