A brief startle that fades is usually different from ongoing fear. Call your veterinarian if your dog remains distressed after a loud noise, has severe or repeated reactions, is getting worse, may hurt itself trying to escape, or develops a new fear response as an adult or senior dog. Seek emergency care for serious physical signs such as difficulty breathing, ongoing seizures, loss of consciousness, severe bleeding, or apparent injury. There is no established universal number of minutes or hours that defines abnormal recovery, so describe your dog’s signs and how long they lasted.
What anxiety after a loud noise can look like
Dogs may respond to fireworks, thunder, or another sudden sound by trembling, panting, pacing, drooling, vocalizing, hiding, digging at doors, seeking their owner, or trying to escape. Some dogs seek contact; others retreat to a quiet place. A strong reaction can continue after the noise itself has stopped.
Pay attention to what happens after the initial startle: whether your dog can settle, how it recovers, and whether the same pattern has happened before. Veterinary sources do not establish a universal recovery-time cutoff, so do not rely on an invented number of minutes or hours to decide whether a reaction is abnormal. Cornell’s guidance on anxious behavior describes the difference between a startle and continuing distress.
When to call your veterinarian
Call your regular veterinarian
Arrange a veterinary discussion if the fear is persistent, severe, recurrent, worsening, or difficult to manage. Call as well if a frightened dog is at risk of escaping or injuring itself, or if a new fear response appears in an adult or senior dog. Pain or underlying illness can contribute to fear, particularly when a response is new or heightened, but behavior alone cannot establish a diagnosis. VCA’s overview of fears, phobias, and anxiety discusses possible medical contributors.

When you call, tell the clinic what triggered the reaction, what your dog did, how long signs lasted, how recovery looked, whether this has happened before, what medications your dog takes, and whether an injury may have occurred. Your veterinarian can assess possible causes and discuss individualized medication or behavior support. For severe fear, a referral to a veterinary behaviorist may be appropriate. Cornell’s fireworks and thunderstorm guidance recommends veterinary help when fear and stress are unmanageable.
Seek emergency veterinary care
Get immediate veterinary help for difficulty breathing, ongoing seizures, loss of consciousness, severe bleeding, shock-like weakness, or apparent trauma. A noise may prompt a dog to bolt, fall, or collide with something; if that happens, treat a possible injury as the priority. Merck’s emergency guidance, last updated in December 2025, also identifies poisoning and heat stroke as urgent conditions.

How to help your dog settle safely
- Offer a familiar quiet place. Make a bed, blanket, or other familiar resting place available away from windows and the noise. A crate is suitable only if your dog is accustomed to it and considers it safe; do not force a panicking dog into confinement.
- Soften outside sounds. Close windows and try a fan, white noise, television, or music. A stuffed food toy may help if your dog is calm enough to eat or engage with it; these are comfort measures, not treatment for severe fear.
- Prevent escape. Secure doors and yard access. If your dog needs to go outside, use a leash, even in a fenced yard.
- Give space rather than forcing contact. Do not punish fear or make your dog face the noise. Avoid grabbing or crowding a panicked dog; a frightened animal may bite unintentionally if approached or restrained.
These practical steps are consistent with Cornell’s tips for protecting pets from fireworks.
Plan for predictable loud events
If noise fear recurs or is unmanageable, discuss a plan with your veterinarian before the next predictable event. Depending on the dog, the plan may include medication and behavior modification. Cornell recommends trying prescribed medication on a quiet day so you can observe your dog’s response. Do not give human medication or an unprescribed sedative based on an article.

A safe haven is more likely to help when the dog already has positive associations with it and can go there before the noise begins. Desensitization and counterconditioning should be planned carefully: exposure intense enough to overwhelm the dog may worsen fear. A veterinarian can help determine whether these approaches fit your dog and whether behaviorist support is needed. Merck’s overview of dog behavior problems discusses behavior-management approaches.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a dog’s noise fear may change
Noise fear can range from mild distress to severe panic. It may be associated with an unpleasant experience, limited early socialization, underlying illness, or anxiety that worsens with age. Dogs can also develop anticipatory fear or begin reacting to other features associated with a storm. A new or intensifying response is a reason to discuss the change with your veterinarian, not to assume a cause at home.
