Help a noise-shy dog by introducing the sound gradually, at a low enough level that the dog stays relaxed, and pairing it with something the dog enjoys. For a washing machine, start with the appliance off or far away; increase the sound or move closer only while your dog remains comfortable. This is an application of veterinary guidance on noise fears, not a washing-machine-specific tested protocol.
Why gradual exposure matters
Systematic desensitization means presenting a feared sound in small, controlled amounts that do not trigger fear, then increasing the challenge gradually. Counterconditioning pairs that sound with a positive experience, such as a favorite treat or play. Together, these approaches can help change what the sound predicts for your dog.
The critical rule is to keep the sound below your dog’s fear threshold. VCA advises: “Do not continue with a session if your pet shows signs of fear or arousal.” (VCA Animal Hospitals, Introduction to Desensitization and Counterconditioning.)
How to work up to a washing machine
- Practice relaxation away from the appliance. Choose a comfortable resting place. If you want to use a cue such as “settle,” teach and reward it while the machine is off and no frightening sound is present. Relaxation should be familiar before you add the trigger. (VCA Animal Hospitals, Fear of Noises in Dogs.)
- Choose an easy starting level. Begin with the machine off, with your dog at a comfortable distance. Then introduce a very low level of sound from farther away if you can do so safely. These are practical ways to adjust distance and volume; they are not steps from a washer-specific clinical protocol.
- Pair the sound with something your dog likes. Offer a favored treat or start a brief, enjoyable game while the quiet sound is present. The sound should predict the good thing. Do not use food to coax a worried dog closer to the machine.
- Keep the first sessions brief and manageable. Look for a dog who can settle and readily take the reward. If your dog stiffens, tries to escape, pants, vocalizes, or stops accepting food, reduce the sound, increase distance, or end the session. Refusing a treat is a useful reason to make the exercise easier, not to press on.
- Increase one challenge at a time. When your dog stays relaxed at the current level, make a small change to either sound volume or distance. Where practical, separate the sound from other parts of the trigger, such as the appliance’s movement or sight, rather than presenting everything at once.
- Repeat at the dog’s pace. Move forward only when your dog is comfortable at the current level. If signs of fear return, go back to an easier level or stop for the day; do not push through in hopes that the dog will get used to it.
What to watch for during training
Judge progress by your dog’s behavior, not by a fixed calendar. Relaxed posture, settling, and willingness to take treats are practical signs that the current level may be manageable. Fear or rising arousal means the exposure is too difficult. Continuing an uncomfortable session can increase sensitivity rather than teach safety. The same approach applies to vacuums and other household sounds: adjust distance, volume, and how much of the trigger is presented at once.

If you cannot make the sound quiet enough or create enough distance for your dog to stay calm, do not force practice beside the running appliance. Pause and ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional for help setting up a safer plan.
How long can desensitization take?
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior says treatment for noise phobias typically takes a minimum of 6–8 weeks and may take many months. That is general guidance for noise-phobia treatment, not a washing-machine trial or a promise about any individual dog. Progress depends on the dog; do not increase exposure just to meet a timetable. The organization emphasizes that a dog should not be exposed to increasingly anxiety-provoking noises until calm at the previous treatment stage (AVSAB, A dog’s least favorite holiday?).

When to ask a veterinarian for help
Contact your veterinarian if the fear is intense, newly appearing, getting worse, or not improving with careful low-intensity practice. A veterinary assessment is especially worthwhile for a senior dog, because pain, changes in vision or hearing, and cognitive changes can contribute to fearful behavior.
Your veterinarian can assess possible health contributors, help build a behavior plan, or refer you to a board-certified veterinary behaviorist or certified applied animal behaviorist. Medication may be considered as part of an individualized plan alongside behavior modification; it is not a substitute for professional assessment.
