Let your dog retreat if the spot is safe; calmly guide them to a safer quiet area if it is not.
Why does my dog hide by the washing machine when it makes a noise?
Hiding, cowering, panting, pacing, or trying to escape can all accompany fear of a sound. A sudden clatter, vibration, alarm, or other unexpected noise may startle a dog; if distress continues after the initial surprise, it deserves attention. VCA describes signs of noise aversion at its guide to noise aversion in dogs, and Cornell discusses sound-related fear at its noise-aversion resource.
The appliance may be part of the association, but it need not be the only trigger. Dogs can connect a frightening sound with nearby sights, smells, activity, or a location. A washing machine may happen to be in a quiet corner or next to a familiar hiding place; household activity around the machine may also be part of what the dog has learned to anticipate. Hiding beside it does not establish which cue matters most, or diagnose a particular fear. Merck explains fear responses and learned associations in its overview of fear-related behavior in dogs; the AKC also discusses dogs’ reactions to household appliances at its appliance guidance.
Is it safe for my dog to hide behind the oven or washing machine?
Not necessarily. Check the actual space rather than assuming that a tucked-away spot is safe. Common household hazards to consider include heat, moving parts, electrical cords, water, cleaning products or other chemicals, and gaps where a dog could become trapped. These are practical checks, not evidence that appliance-related injuries have been quantified.

- Keep your dog away from hot surfaces and any appliance that is operating if the hiding place puts them near heat or moving parts.
- Look for accessible cords, leaks or standing water, and detergents or other chemicals.
- Check whether the dog can turn around and leave freely. Do not block an exit while trying to reach into a confined space.
Cornell’s guidance on keeping pets safe during noise events is available at its noise-aversion resource. If the spot poses an immediate danger, calmly prevent access or open a safe escape route when you can do so without cornering or grabbing a panicking dog.
Should I pull my scared dog out of its hiding place?
If the spot is safe, let your dog remain there and choose when to come out. Do not punish, crowd, or physically drag a frightened dog, and do not force food on them. Forcing contact can add pressure while the dog is already distressed.

If the hiding place is hazardous, focus first on safety: calmly block access to the hazard or make a clear route to a safer area. Avoid reaching into a tight space where the dog could feel trapped. When it is safe to do so, make a quieter room or familiar retreat available and let the dog move there voluntarily.
How can I help my dog feel safe after a loud noise?
Reduce the noise and offer a voluntary retreat
Stay calm and, where possible, reduce exposure to the sound. Offer a quiet area with familiar bedding or toys. Closing doors or windows, drawing curtains, and using calming background sound may make the noise less noticeable. These are environmental-management suggestions from the American Animal Hospital Association’s noise-phobia guidance.

A crate can be part of a comfortable safe space only if your dog already chooses it willingly and has positive associations with it. Do not force a fearful dog into a crate during an episode. Merck cautions that a safe haven must be established ahead of time: “For a safe haven to be effective, dog owners must build positive associations with it long before using it during actual events.” See Merck’s guidance on treating phobias of discrete stimuli in dogs.
Build calm associations before the next noise
When your dog is relaxed, make the chosen retreat pleasant with ordinary positive experiences there. If you plan sound training, use a recording at a level so low that your dog stays relaxed, pair it with something enjoyable, and increase the volume gradually over time. Stop or reduce the sound if your dog shows fear. The goal is calm learning, not enduring a frightening level of noise: Merck advises against flooding, and VCA warns that poorly implemented exposure can worsen fear. Read Merck’s treatment guidance and VCA’s noise-aversion guidance before attempting a training plan.

When should I contact a veterinarian?
Talk with your veterinarian if the fear is severe, keeps recurring, is new or getting worse, or includes repeated escape attempts or possible self-injury. A veterinarian can assess the problem and advise whether further behavioral support is appropriate. For significant fear, a veterinary behaviorist or qualified positive-reinforcement professional can help plan safe, gradual behavior work; avoid trying to make the dog “get used to” the noise by exposing them to a level that triggers panic.
