Dogs and geese can live on the same property, but that does not mean they should have free access to one another. A secure goose enclosure, a dog assessed on its own behavior, and active supervision are essential; some dogs will chase or attack poultry, while geese may act defensively, especially when nesting.
What makes a dog-and-goose setup safe?
Plan for separation first, and treat any shared space as a supervised exception—not proof that the animals are compatible. Poultry Extension identifies a dog’s breed, experience, and the presence of other dogs as factors in poultry predation, and notes that a dog that has attacked a flock may repeat the behavior. Breed alone cannot establish that a particular dog is safe around geese. Poultry Extension’s guidance on dog predation discusses these risks.
Geese can also injure a dog. They may be territorial, and Canada geese can become defensive during nesting season. Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources advises: “Geese can become defensive during nesting season. Keep pets leashed or fenced to reduce stress on both geese and pets.” Chasing can put both animals at risk. Michigan DNR’s Canada goose guidance addresses pet control around geese.
How to manage contact
- Provide a secure barrier. Keep geese in a fenced enclosure or enclosed run designed for the animals and property. Extension predator guidance recommends fencing or enclosed runs, and Texas A&M recommends secure outdoor fencing to protect geese, including from neighborhood dogs. - Consider the individual dog. Chasing, fixation, lunging, previous attacks on poultry, or difficulty responding to the handler are practical warning signs for maintaining strict separation. They are not a formal diagnostic test. A calm appearance in one situation—or a history of calm behavior—does not guarantee future safety.
- If you try an introduction, retain control. Keep the dog controlled and the geese able to retreat behind a barrier. Watch closely and end contact if the dog chases or lunges, geese repeatedly charge, or either animal appears distressed. This is a conservative way to apply the available risk guidance, not a validated introduction protocol or a guarantee of safety.
- Prevent chasing, particularly near nests. Keep the dog leashed or behind a fence around nesting geese. Territorial defensiveness can change the risk even if the animals have previously shared space peacefully.
- Keep the option to separate them. Supervise any contact and be ready to restore the barrier immediately. The available guidance does not establish a supervision duration that makes every dog-and-goose pairing safe.
How much space do geese need?
Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences recommends at least 1 square meter per goose for indoor night housing and 2 square meters per goose for outdoor housing. It also says that three geese will typically be happy in a 20-by-40-foot pen. These are Texas A&M husbandry recommendations, reported on a page dated approximately 2015—not a required dog-to-goose separation distance or a universal legal standard. Geese also need their own suitable outdoor housing, space, grass, and water access. Texas A&M quotes clinical associate professor Sharman Hoppes: “Pet geese need a large yard with grass and housing that keeps them warm in the winter and can protect them from the heat in the summer.” These needs are separate from the question of how to keep a dog away from them.

Keep dogs out of bird-keeping areas where practical, and do not let them contact sick or dead wild birds, bird remains, or droppings. Manage feed, water, housing, and equipment to reduce contamination and access by wild birds or roaming pets. Clean footwear and equipment around bird areas, and consult local disease-control notices and rules, which can change by jurisdiction and during outbreaks.
