Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe safest outdoor setup for dogs and geese uses separate, secure areas with access controlled by a person—not an assumption that the animals can safely share a yard. Build the geese a predator-resistant enclosure and shelter, keep the dog supervised outdoors, and allow contact only when an adult can intervene. The right design depends on your animals, local predators, climate, and property; no single fence specification guarantees safety.
Can dogs and geese safely share an outdoor space?
They can use the same property, but unsupervised direct access is risky. Geese may defend nests or young, potentially injuring a dog, while a dog may chase, injure, or kill a goose. The Humane Society of the United States discusses these risks for Canada geese; domestic geese also need to be managed according to their behavior and circumstances. The Humane Society’s Canada goose guidance is not a compatibility test for a particular dog or a guarantee that training will prevent conflict.
ASPCA guidance says, “Always supervise your dog while they’re outdoors—even in a fenced yard. Don’t allow your dog to roam alone.” A fence helps organize space and limit access; it does not replace supervision. ASPCA Dog Bite Prevention
Plan separate zones and controlled access
Give the geese an enclosure and shelter the dog cannot enter unsupervised. Arrange gates and paths so neither animal can slip through while the other is being moved. If the layout allows, use a buffer area or a second gate at the entrance to the goose enclosure, so opening one barrier does not immediately create access to the other zone. This is a practical layout recommendation, not a tested universal blueprint.

Keep the dog outdoors only under active supervision, including in a fenced yard. Maintain separation unless an adult is present, attentive, and able to intervene. Do not allow the dog into an area with nesting geese or goslings: defensive geese may injure a dog, and an uncontrolled dog may harm the birds. If the dog shows persistent chasing or aggression, keep the animals separated and seek help from a qualified behavior professional.
Build the goose enclosure for site-specific hazards
Plan for the threats present at your property: digging predators, animals approaching from above, wild birds, and damage or gaps in fencing. Penn State Extension’s poultry-housing guidance recommends covering outdoor runs and burying fencing at the pen edge; Minnesota Extension recommends small-mesh hardware cloth to help keep wild birds out while allowing poultry outdoor access. These are design considerations, not a promise that a particular material or dimension will secure every yard.

Penn State gives one specific digging-deterrent example: bury wire at least 12 inches along the pen border and turn it outward about 6 inches. Whether that approach suits your soil, predators, and enclosure requires local judgment. Do not treat these measurements as a universal fence specification or a guarantee against escape or attack. Small-mesh hardware cloth can help limit wild-bird entry, but choose and install materials for the size and behavior of the animals, the local hazards, and the enclosure’s construction. Inspect for escape routes and injury hazards
Check gates, joins, corners, and the ground line for openings or damage. Remove loose or ragged wire, nails, and sharp-edged objects from poultry housing, and repair worn fencing and equipment. Penn State Extension: Raising Fowl in Urban Areas
Look for hazards on both sides of a barrier: a dog may exploit a gap or damage a weak section, while geese may become injured by sharp or loose materials. Include latches that are reliable and easy for the person managing the animals to use, and inspect them as part of routine maintenance.

Provide shelter, space, and daily care
Containment is only one part of a suitable outdoor space. Place the goose shelter on well-drained ground and keep it dry and draft-free, with ventilation as needed. Provide adequate room, comfortable resting areas, food, clean water, and protection from weather, predators, and disease. ASPCA housing principles also call for opportunities to express natural behaviors and for appropriate enrichment. ASPCA: Confinement, Outdoor Access, Space & Enrichment
Reduce contact with wild birds and disease risks
Keep poultry separated from wild birds using an enclosed shelter and a protected outdoor area. Minnesota Extension notes that waterfowl can shed avian influenza virus without showing signs of illness. Store feed covered or indoors, clean spills, and keep equipment clean. If there is a local outbreak, ask your veterinarian or state animal-health authority for current instructions rather than relying on general guidance that may not reflect conditions in your area.
Check local rules before building or handling wildlife
Requirements for keeping domestic geese, fencing, zoning, and wildlife vary by location. Check the rules that apply to your property before construction or animal handling. Canada goose guidance is not a substitute for checking applicable law: the Humane Society’s 2019 plan states, “If a dog catches or harms a goose, it is a violation of federal law.” That statement concerns Canada geese and should not be treated as location-specific legal advice for every circumstance. The Humane Society of the United States: Solving Problems with Canada Geese
When to get local help
Ask a local extension service or qualified enclosure professional to assess uncertain predator risks, construction, drainage, or material choices. A veterinarian can advise on animal health and disease concerns; a qualified behavior professional can help with persistent chasing or aggression. The available guidance does not establish a universal fence height, mesh gauge, or area size that guarantees a dog-and-goose setup is safe.
