A pet goose should have suitable grass or other forage plus a nutritionally complete waterfowl maintenance pellet matched to its life stage. Goslings need starter feed, while bread, crackers, and a bread-lettuce-corn-only diet are not balanced staples. The right amount depends on the individual bird, so seek an avian veterinarian’s advice for geese with special needs or changes in body condition.
What should a pet goose eat?
Build an adult goose’s diet around grazing or suitable forage, with a complete commercial waterfowl maintenance feed to help supply balanced nutrition. The Merck Veterinary Manual recommends commercial duck or game-bird maintenance pellets for adult waterfowl and notes that geese share the diet of herbivorous ducks. Its reviewed reference range for adult maintenance feed is 14–17% protein and 3–6% fat, with vitamin and mineral supplementation. These are general waterfowl guidelines, not a custom prescription for every goose. Merck Veterinary Manual: Nutrition in Waterfowl
Grass is a major part of a goose’s natural feeding pattern. Texas A&M’s pet-geese guidance also identifies commercial waterfowl diets as suitable, including feeds made for different ages; for an individual bird, follow current veterinary guidance and the feed’s instructions. Adult geese
Offer suitable forage alongside a complete maintenance pellet. A goose that is laying, breeding, underweight, overweight, ill, or kept without meaningful forage may need a tailored ration. Merck notes that protein can be increased during breeding season, but this is not a reason to change an individual bird’s feed without veterinary advice.

Goslings
Use an age-appropriate waterfowl starter feed rather than trying to assemble a growing bird’s diet from kitchen foods. Merck summarizes this feeding schedule and nutrient guidance for waterfowl:
| Age | Feed guidance | Merck reference figures |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 8 weeks | Starter feed | 25–28% protein; 5–8% fat; 0.85–1.2% calcium; 0.3–0.6% phosphorus |
| 8–12 weeks | Transition using a mixture of starter and maintenance diets | Not stated for this transition mixture in Merck’s summarized schedule |
| After 12 weeks | Maintenance diet | Adult maintenance reference: 14–17% protein and 3–6% fat |
These are general waterfowl references, not a tested plan for a particular gosling or a substitute for the feed label and veterinary advice. Merck cautions that excessively rapid growth in large waterfowl can contribute to bone and joint problems. Merck Veterinary Manual: Nutrition in Waterfowl

Can pet geese eat greens and treats?
Suitable forage supports grazing behavior. Some lettuce may be offered for enrichment, but it should not replace balanced feed. Tufts lists shredded leafy greens and some grains as more appropriate offerings than bread for waterfowl, and advises making offered foods bite-sized. Keep treats and enrichment foods supplemental to the goose’s balanced ration. Tufts: Angel Wing in Waterfowl
Do geese need grit?
Geese use grit to help grind food. A goose on pasture can typically pick up enough small pebbles while foraging, so every bird does not automatically need purchased grit. If your goose has no access to suitable natural stones, ask an avian veterinarian whether supplemental poultry grit is appropriate for its setup. University of Kentucky Extension: Raising Waterfowl

What foods and feeding habits should you avoid?
- Do not make bread, crackers, or other people-food a regular staple. They do not provide the balanced nutrition a growing or adult waterfowl bird needs. Tufts warns that inappropriate diets high in carbohydrates and protein from people-food can contribute to angel wing risk. Tufts: Angel Wing in Waterfowl
- Do not feed only bread, lettuce, and corn. Merck says this pattern can lead to protein and multiple vitamin deficiencies, with problems including poor plumage, swollen joints, and pododermatitis. Merck Veterinary Manual: Nutrition in Waterfowl
- Do not offer moldy or accumulated feed. Moldy feed at feeding sites has been associated with illness risk in wild-waterfowl guidance; keep feed clean and remove leftovers that become spoiled. University of Minnesota Extension: Feeding Waterfowl
Wildlife advice is a separate case from pet care. California wildlife authorities discourage food handouts to wild waterfowl; that does not provide a managed diet for a domestic goose. California Department of Fish and Wildlife: Geese
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much should you feed a pet goose?
There is no universal daily portion established for every pet goose. Follow the directions for the complete feed you use, and ask an avian veterinarian to tailor the ration to the bird’s body condition, forage access, age, and breeding or laying status. Seek veterinary advice promptly for illness, deformity, abnormal body condition, or suspected ingestion of something unsafe; a comprehensive list of toxic foods for geese is not established by the sources cited here.
