Keep your newly adopted pet away from tempting decorations and holiday food, preserve familiar routines, and set up a quiet place to retreat before visitors arrive. These practical steps follow general veterinary guidance for dogs and cats; there is no established adjustment timeline that guarantees when a recently adopted animal will feel comfortable.
What to do before the holiday gathering
- Set up a retreat. Choose a quiet room away from guests and loud activity. For a cat, provide food, water, a litter box, and a bed; for either species, add familiar bedding or toys. Make the space available before guests arrive, and let your pet stay there if it prefers.
- Reduce access to hazards. Secure decorations, food, drinks, medications, and garbage. Use a closed door or a suitable baby or pet gate to keep your animal out of decorated rooms when you cannot supervise. A gate is a management aid, not a guarantee of safety. Cornell’s holiday hazards guidance suggests limiting unsupervised access; the Cornell Feline Health Center also recommends securing cords from cats.
- Keep familiar routines where possible. Maintain usual meal and walk times, and make time for play. Cornell veterinarian Aly Cohen advises: “Try to maintain your dog’s normal schedule for meals and walks, even if your household is busier than usual.” If your pet has known medical, fear, or behavior concerns, ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional about a plan.
- Give guests one clear rule. Ask them not to feed scraps or treats unless you have explicitly approved them. Keep serving platters, wrapped food, drinks, guest medications, and trash out of reach.
Which decorations can hurt pets?
Decorations can cause problems if swallowed, chewed, tipped over, or broken. Cats may be especially drawn to string-like items, while any pet that explores with its mouth can get into trouble.
| Hazard | What can happen | How to reduce risk |
|---|---|---|
| Tinsel, garland, ribbon, and small ornaments | Swallowed material can obstruct the intestines; broken ornaments can cause choking or cuts in the mouth or digestive tract. | Skip tinsel and loose string-like decorations, secure ornaments, and block access when you cannot supervise. |
| Electrical cords and batteries | Chewing cords can cause burns or electrocution. Punctured batteries can burn the mouth and esophagus. | Cover or secure cords, tie them out of reach, and keep batteries inaccessible. |
| Salt-dough ornaments and ice melt | Ingested salt can cause dangerous electrolyte problems. | Keep ornaments and ice-melt products beyond reach; clean up residue where pets walk. |
| Tree needles and water | Pine needles can irritate the mouth and may cause vomiting, diarrhea, obstruction, or perforation. Tree water may contain harmful bacteria or chemicals. | Secure the tree, sweep fallen needles, and cover or block access to the water reservoir. |
| Candles and snow globes | A knocked-over candle can start a fire. A broken snow globe may expose pets to highly toxic ethylene glycol. | Keep candles stable and out of reach; remove broken snow globes and prevent access to the spill. |
For cats that investigate wires, a cord protector or tying cords up can help limit access, but also block access to the area when needed. Secure the tree so it cannot tip, and keep wrapped food off the floor and trash containing food or broken decorations inaccessible.

- Chocolate, coffee, and other caffeine
- Grapes and raisins
- Xylitol
- Onions and garlic
- Alcohol
- Fatty, rich, sweet, or spicy foods
- Bones, especially poultry bones, which can injure the mouth or esophagus
- Salty snacks, macadamia nuts, yeast dough, corn cobs, and raw meat
Keep drinks, food, and garbage secured even if guests are careful. Cornell and ASPCA also identify guest medications as a potential hazard. The ASPCA holiday safety tips recommend keeping pets on their ordinary diet and keeping rich foods and poultry bones away; the AVMA household hazards guidance notes risks from rich or spicy foods and bones.
Which holiday plants are risky?
- Lilies: Many lilies in holiday bouquets are highly dangerous to cats and can cause kidney failure. Keep bouquets containing lilies out of homes with cats.
- Mistletoe: Ingestion can cause vomiting and diarrhea; large ingestions can also cause heart problems and low blood pressure.
- Holly: Can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and reduced appetite.
- Poinsettia: Generally causes mouth and gastrointestinal irritation, rather than the severe effects associated with lilies.
Keep seasonal plants and bouquets inaccessible. If you suspect your pet has chewed or swallowed a plant, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting to see whether symptoms develop.

How can you help a newly adopted pet cope with visitors?
Unfamiliar people, loud noise, and a disrupted schedule may be stressful. Do not make your pet greet guests or leave its retreat. For dogs, a quiet room, bed, toys, or a long-lasting treat may help; Cornell notes that some dogs may benefit from a sound machine or silicone lick mat. For cats, use a quiet room away from guests with food, water, litter, and a bed, and take care around doors that could be left open.
Watch how your pet responds and give it the option to withdraw. If anxiety is a concern, Cornell recommends discussing it with a veterinarian early; use medication only under veterinary guidance and follow the veterinarian’s advice about trying it before an event.

What should you do if your pet eats something hazardous?
- Call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen. Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian, Pet Poison Helpline, or ASPCA Poison Control after suspected ingestion; verify current phone numbers and service details directly with the provider.
- Share useful details. Be ready with your pet’s breed, age, weight, any symptoms, and the product container or a plant sample if available, as advised by the AVMA.
- Know where to go. Identify the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital before a holiday gathering so you can act without delay if directed.
Cornell companion-animal veterinarian Leni Kaplan advises: “Contact a veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet ingested any dangerous foods, items or if they are not acting right.”
