Teach a dog to use stairs by making each step voluntary, rewarding calm progress, and ensuring the surface has secure traction. Keep practice brief and supervised; never pull, push, or punish a hesitant dog. If reluctance is new or comes with limping or other signs of discomfort, pause and ask a veterinarian before training.

Before training, check whether stairs are appropriate

A dog that has always avoided stairs may be uncertain about the height, footing, or movement involved. But a dog that suddenly hesitates, moves differently, or limps may be experiencing pain or impaired mobility. Difficulty on stairs can be part of a lameness history, and reluctance to use stairs can be a pain signal in older dogs. Pause training and contact your veterinarian if you notice a new or persistent change. Cornell’s overview of lameness in dogs and the AKC’s discussion of arthritis in dogs explain why mobility changes warrant attention.

For a dog with a diagnosed condition, injury, or pain, your veterinarian’s advice takes priority. The right plan may be to limit stair access rather than teach the dog to use the staircase.

Make the staircase safe and predictable

Check that the stairs are stable and that your dog can get a reliable grip. Slippery or loose coverings can make the task harder and less safe. Options for improving traction include a securely fitted carpet runner or stick-down grip tape; dog-friendly textured treads may also help. Make sure any covering lies flat and cannot shift underfoot. VCA’s home-modification guidance discusses traction and stair access for dogs with osteoarthritis.

Supervise practice. A barrier on one side may help guide a dog and discourage premature leaps, where the staircase allows it. If your dog should avoid stairs when unsupervised, use a baby gate or another secure barrier. VCA notes that a veterinarian may recommend avoiding unnecessary stairs for a dog with mobility limitations.

Teach stair use one small choice at a time

Choose a calm moment and use a staircase with secure footing. Keep treats or a favorite toy nearby. The goal is a comfortable, voluntary approach—not reaching the top or bottom in one session. The AKC’s guidance on dog stairs and ramps recommends brief practice, exploration, and rewarding progress.

  1. Let your dog investigate. Stand near the stairs and allow your dog to look, sniff, or approach at their own pace. Reward calm interest with praise, a treat, or play.
  2. Reward small advances. When your dog chooses to move closer or place a paw on a step, reward that choice. Build gradually, rewarding each comfortable advance rather than luring or pulling the dog farther than they want to go.
  3. Pause before your dog becomes overwhelmed. Keep sessions short and stop while your dog is still comfortable. The sources support brief sessions but do not establish a universal session length or number of repetitions.
  4. Let hesitation mean “make it easier.” Give your dog room to retreat. Try again later with an easier approach, such as rewarding calmness near the stairs before asking for a step. Do not drag, push, or punish a reluctant dog; pressure can create a negative association with the stairs.
  5. Supervise every practice. Stay close enough to monitor footing and movement, and prevent unsupervised access if your dog needs stairs restricted.

Use extra care with puppies and dogs with mobility limits

Puppies

Repeated jumping down and frequent trips down long staircases may add trauma. Cornell reports that many breeders recommend limiting puppies to two or three stairs until six months of age or older. That is a breeder recommendation reported by Cornell, not a universal veterinary cutoff for every puppy. Ask your veterinarian what is suitable for your puppy’s age, size, development, and health. Cornell’s elbow-dysplasia information discusses the concern about repeated impact and stair use.

Dogs with pain or limited mobility

Some dogs should not practice household stairs without veterinary guidance. Your veterinarian may recommend restricting access, improving traction, or using a different way to reach a needed destination. A baby gate can help prevent access when stairs should be avoided.

When a ramp or pet stairs may be a better aid

Ramps and small pet stairs can help some dogs reach furniture or get into a vehicle, but they are not substitutes for training on a household staircase. Choose an aid for the specific task and the individual dog. Consider whether the dog can keep balance, whether the surface provides grip, whether the ramp’s slope is manageable, and whether the equipment is stable and rated for the dog’s weight. A dog with pain or impaired mobility may need veterinary advice before using any access aid. The AKC explains the differences between stairs and ramps in its stairs-versus-ramps guide.
